Default funny tech problem of the day

my son is using the oldest computer we run atm.

yesterday he goes,,. Dad my screen went blank..

i'm like, ok that is not good...
i hard reboot computer- nada no bios no nothing
so i check the connection to the computer- fine
check the insides- dusty, so i vacuum that out, insides check fine

    turn on computer, blank screen

ok break open the computer we are not using take out the video card- replace the one we have in there- blank screen

i'm stumped... go ok maybe it is the hdd

switch the hdd - blank screen

i'm like shit maybe the mobo went

reassemble the old computer (which works fine, it's just "older")

    start moving cables

and the monitor cable falls off the monitor...

the one connection i didn't even think to check/look at because most monitors are hard wired. this monitor's (old samsung 17" lcd) cable screws in like the connector to the video card.

i swear, start laughing, reconnect dillon's computer...working fine

I work in a help desk (2nd level support). Our first question to the 1st level support trying to escalate something to us usually is 'is it plugged in? Is it turned on?' This solves more issues then you would think.

All our HP monitors are screw ins. For your exact reason is why I make certain I screw both ends down tightly.

on a side note my wife's screen has started "jumping" be fine then some tearing occurs (vsync is on)....

this is with an old lcd monitor (old 20" dell-was350ish when i bought it) so i was thinking maybe monitor. so she bought a 23" acer led-lcd - thing is huge, i also changed the dvi connector (she has 2 ) thinking maybe the connector is shot. so far so good...i just gotta adjust/calibrate the screen -its a bit "washed out" compared to the d ell (already turned brightness down from 100% to 50%- decreased the blue some)
