View Full Version : The Secret of Trakanons Lair

Why does nobody ever reveal how to pull this place without getting a dragon breathing on you? I really don't know. Its supposed to be one of those monk secrets, a 'coming of age' test maybe? I dunno. Well, here it is anyway. Its something I wrote for my old guild, and now I'll post it here.
http://homepage.ntlworld.com/goth/traklair.jpg
Okay, let me explain this a bit.
Trakanon: He has two positions, marked 1 and 2 on the map. When he's in position 1 you're safe to pull. If you can't see his wing from the top left hand corner of the map (near the water), then hes in position 1. He moves roughly every 20 minutes.
Protector: He wanders through those 3 positions, but not in that order. He might go from 1 to 3, then to 2 to 1, then to 2 to 3. Anything with three positions or more are like that. I've never bothered writing down the exact order.
Brown Wandering Juggernaut: Also wanders through 3 positions.
Blue Wandering Juggernaut: He goes back and fore between those two points. He tends to stay at position 1 more than number 2, but when he goes to 2, he tends to stay there a while.
Okay, so how to do this:
First, get DMF (Dead Man Floating), you're going to need it. Also get shrink (it makes you run faster) and/or Run Speed 3. It'll make things a whole lot safer on your poor head.
When Trak is in the safe spot, run up to the X on the map and feign. This is a great spot to watch all the mobs moving around. What you need to do to get the protector out of there is have the Protector at position 1, the brown Jugg at position 2, and the blue Jugg at position 1.
Rule number 1 about Trakanons lair, and something you must never forget. Never ever attack anything, it'll aggro Trakanon. For the Protector to chase you, you literally have to stand under its nose. Its got a VERY small aggro radius, so you have to run up there and stand under its nose until it gets annoyed at your presence. When hes following, float off the edge (you did remember DMF didn't you?), circle around over the water and float down toward the cavern entrance, where your raid group should be hiding further inside. This will stop the Protector from beating on you (he really hurts) and you can usually get to your raid team before he catches up with you.
Kill the Protector and its onto the rest. Go back to your X on the map, watch and wait. When Brown Jugg is at 2 and Blue Jugg is at 2, run up and let Blue Jugg aggro on you. This will set off a chain reaction. Brown Jugg will be close enough to get annoyed, and also the stationary Jugg next to him will get annoyed, so you'll have all three remaining Juggernauts chasing you back to the raid camp. Again float off the edge over the water to avoid a beating.
And there you go. You're all ready to kill Trakanon. Don't worry about the other two stationarys and the Froglok, they won't aggro you, they're too far away. Just make sure Trakanon doesn't gate. It happened to me one time and he gated right on top of the Froglok, aggroing them too. That was messy, but we won in the end. Always fight Trak in his cave, as far back as you can, near Position 1 marked on the map. And when you approach him, go over the rock, not around it, that helps too.
The End.
EDIT NOTE: Its been a while since I did it. You might need to do the Juggernauts first then the Protector, not the other way around. When you pull, never have anything at position 3.

Good guide, thanks for helping out all the monks with no Trakky experience.
Also, Shrink does NOT make you run faster. It makes your shorter, which changes your vantage point, making it SEEM like you run faster. If you don't believe me, create an ogre and run around a bit, then do the same with a halfling. All level 1 characters move at the same speed, and yet it looks like the halfling is moving faster, doesn't it?

I have a little trick for you if you fail once.. or in case Trak is not in the correct position (instead of waiting for him to move into position).
Get a Paladin, grouped up with a mage. Have the pally DA, and run into Traks lair pulling him to the back of his lair. Around your position one.. but you can pull him even further. Count off 8 seconds and have the Mage start Coh'ing the Paladin. Pally gets coh'd to safety, and Trak is safely tucked away in his room. The prot pull is simple after that and you saved your raid a ton of time instead of waiting for him to move on his own to spot 1 .
I have used this method on two different occasions and it worked like a charm. Personally I dont believe the pally trusted me enough to actually try it.. lol.

For a fast and easy Trak kill without killing rest of lair...
Just get Trak stuck in the hall/cave near the setup spot (I'll let you figure how to do that) and kill him there.
Then after Trak is dead, you go up and kill the rest of the lair.. prot, jumppy, and all.
Just hope Trak doesn't get off a gate or you'll have to rush the whole lair anyway.
Trak is an easy kill so with 30+ people you should be able to kill him before he gets that gate off.
Good technique to have incase your monk blows the pull and you "accidentally" get Trak stuck in hall.

Are you sure about shrink not increasing your speed? It certainly feels like it does, even when pulling. Some things I can get further away from and take less beatings when I'm shrunk, than if I'm normal size. Hmm.. I'll have to test it sometime.

Kool info:
1) disarm to aggro? gonna try the range that will work out
2) ah dmf = walking on water 8-)
3) great to know to just let it aggro u and not throw a hammer, would have saved my life me thinks
thanks, gonna read this board a bit more so i dont look like such a noob!

Put a tank on the Prot, have your enchanters charm any adds, kill trak. The potential to have to sit there for a long time waiting for this to set up so you can pull Prot is just to high.

Actually, it doesn't take too long to cycle. I think the full movement of all three is about 5 minutes, so you get maybe three or four shots at clearing the cave before Trak moves and you have to wait another 20 minutes for him to get back out the way.

The only problem with pulling the rest of the lair before Trak is that if you mess up and aggro Trak while pulling rest...
Sometimes it takes forever for him to walk back into lair and take up his position. Trak likes to corpse camp too. Lazy bastid. Anyway, if you screw up the pull the first time, your guild is usually pushing you to speed it up. Either tell them to have patience or come do it themselves. If you rush it you will likely wipe. On the otherhand if you do rush it, just get him stuck in cave near setup spot and smash him there. Like I said before.. Just be ready to rush the lair with full spawn up if you don't have enough firepower to burn him to ashes before he gates.

I was wondering, is it possible to FD split off the other 2 Juggs when pulling the last 3? Or would that make Trak agro somehow? Thanx guys.

The other night myself and Defendant duo pulled the lair. Def pulled the 2 roamer juggs without aggroing Trak or the Prot. While the guild was fighting those 2 mobs, me still waiting in lair, saw my chance to grab the Prot when he moved forward. I grabbed the Prot and took him back to the raid force. So yes, it is possible to split off the other 2 juggs from the Prot. And .. If you really know what you are doing, with a lil luck and a lot of timing you can split em off without even having to FD. Just keep in mind those 2 other juggs are roamers so they will not lose aggro easy. Just hope when you pop up out of FD, they are far enough away from Trak that when they go running after you, they don't bring that damn devil dragon with them.
Being level 60 and knowing how to use aggro range pulling well helps a ton. Not really much science to it on the surface, just inch up close enough to a mob till it sees you and attacks. Then run like hell back to your raid party.

Javelins make this pull trivial. Get dmf and fd at position x and throw one at prot when they are both in the right position.
If you have the power to kill Trak, then you have the power to kill Prot with a couple of Jugg adds.
The buff up, and go waste that leezard. Hey presto

I'll add in my negative experience here, and you can all tell me I was a bloody stupid arse, and got what I deserved...
But I (54th monk) was along on a raid into Trak's lair. First pull attempt I was just chain tagger for a 59 monk. I know he hadn't seen this guide, I don't know if he had ever pulled Trak before. While Trak was in his safe little corner, he proceeded to run up the left side stairs/path and throw a hammer at a jug or prot. Which succeeded in pulling the Trak, the juggs and prot. Needless to say, that turned into a near total wipeout. Some people camped/lived and the raid was reborn within an hour. Note, even though the rest of the raid was tucked back into the tunnel well, all the nasties managed to sniff them out and decide to visit.
After CR that monk had to leave for RL reasons. So it was passed on to me to pull the lair. This was my only my second time in Seb, but I figured I'd give it a shot. I had read the guide, and figured I had at least a 50/50 shot at pulling it off.
Trak was no longer at his safe point, so we recruited a pally, grouped him with the CoH mage, and sent him on his way. A timing misunderstanding by the mage meant the pally was dead before the CoH completed casting. Trak was moved however, mission completed, so we got the Pally to Seb, summonsed, rezzed and we continued on.
I move up to the feign spot, hit the deck and proceed to wait. The only thing I don't like about this spot... is that the Prot blocks my view of the nearby wandering jugg, making impossible to determine if the jugg is in position 2 or 3. Soon I see my chance, and off I go to make my first pull. But silly me, I float too far over the edge and sink before I get to the Prot and have to reset. No biggie.
So here is where I make my critical mistake. I'm still waiting for the right set up to pull, but the Prot is blocking my view. I'm not sure how close I can get to the static juggs/frog before aggroing them, so instead of trying to inch closer for a cleared viewing angle, I try another tactic. I have an eye of zomm device and figure I'll try that for a better view. Except that as soon as I click it, the casting effect (has to be) triggers cascading aggro through the lair. Trak, Juggs, Prot etc. Needless to say I FD right there and see if things will settle down so I can /q and try again. Except that the train rolls right on by me and proceeds to massacre the raid crew in the tunnel. I get up and head back down to help/die in a more convienent location at this point. At this point, the classes that lived or camped, or had to leave for RL reason left us with insufficent numbers to perform a CR on the spot, and necro summons/rez's were done at the zone later.
I believe that even casting that close to the mobs in Trak's lair was aggro inducing, because to the best of my knowledge, Eye of Zomm is no longer aggro inducing. What I'd like to know, is what caused the aggro to get passed all the way back to the raid force in the tunnel? Shouldn't I have been able to die as a sacrifice and then continue on after rez? Anyone else have any other input? How close to the statics can you get before FDing (to get a better view angle of the wanders)? And in response to GukMonster's post, are Javelins an exception to the "Don't hit anything rule" because of their extreme range?
Another tips for the puller: Don't be group leader, if you were a leader and get asked to pull, reform your group. Makes it easier to change group formation if you need a CoH mage suddenly, and allows you to /q and get back into the group with more ease.

No problem with checking the Juggs if Prot is standing right in front of you, just use external camera to scout, when lying on the upper part of the ramp you can even see Trak in his safe spot. Personally I use the 4th external camera (the last one before returning into 1st person view).
Just killed him yesterday (yay, finally got VP key finished), since the caster upgrade he seems to be a bit tougher, cought the usual dot, even with 450 PR, then managed to get aggro (eek, bad when the MT manages to go down in the first 10 seconds) and immediately cought a 1.5k dmg spell... Didn't take him much hits to finish me...

Moriza, Trak aggros on sight, there is no aggro range on him, if he sees you he aggros. Is it possible that someone in your raid group wasn't hidden? I had this problem with my first Trakanon attempt.. unfortunately we didn't have time to try again.. he jumped on me when I was checking where he was.. got too close and he spotted me. I feigned and he then jumped down the tunnel and chewed the raid party to pieces. People weren't hiding.
Best place to go is just before you enter the large cave. It sort of winds from the cave, down a bit, then turns sharply and rises to a flat area which is slightly bigger than the other spots. Thats the best place for the raid team to wait.
About the Eye of Zomm thing. Is it possible you caught some aggro when you tried to go for the pull? Something you didn't notice? It sounds like you stood up and re-aggro'd. I've never heard of spell casting being a bother there, but never tried it.

Very good guide.
One note i would mention is that this pull / split does not require a monk, although it's much safer for the puller if it's a monk. As an enchanter, I usually pull Traks lair and clear the way to Trak. I use the same techniques lined out here except that I generally try to pull the 2 juggs, then prot. I use distance agro then float back forcing the mobs to path around the lake and allowing me to live another day. Once cleared, it's your typical rush into Trak's Lair.

This is how we do it:
We take 3 groups of 58+ and have them wait at the bridge before his lair.
We send a Pally, or Cleric(usually our guildleader who loves this suicidal crap) to DA and move Trak to the back of his lair out of Line of Sight. After a few seconds we CoTH the DA pally/cleric back to the raid.
Then I proceed to pull the Protector and whatever Juggs come(usually 4 or 5). We leave Tola and a couple Juggs around him up....they don't aggro.
We put 2 Pallies and 2 Warriors in the main group with a cleric and a CoTH mage. We put our other 2 groups in the niche just past bridge about halfway up the walkway to Trak's lair.
We send up the 2 Pallies DA'd first of all. They get some Trak aggro and then call the assist. We all run up and melee's use all damage /discs as soon as fight begins.
We have discovered that CoTH is a great tool to use to defeat Trak. If he banishes a tank to Shrooms, just CoTH them back.
Trak goes down FAST and tries to run from the lair and WILL gate back and be about 25% health...if this happens it's doubtful you'll recover. Make sure your nukers are in melee range of Trak or the nukes will not land.

Another part for those of you who like to clear the yard trash before Trak.
Get shrink. You can watch Trak through the wall then and that'll tell you what position he's in and when he's moving around. Once he's in the back, just toss out your range item and tada. Instant pudding.

whew I happened to find my printed copy of this map in my stack of EQ crap while I was cleaning out my EQ trapper folder
I dont have a scanner plus I wrote all over it , but I might be able to re-create the map with mspaint or something.
