found a simple strategy that works - if you ever ask for mayo or salt+pepper at subway, they often give you too much and ruins the sandwich - especially if its a footlong. What you do is ask for something you dont eat (for me thats tomatoes) For others maybe green peppers or something, but do that, and open up the sandwich and take whatever you dont want out and its perfect.

they always put a FULL HEAD of lettuce on my subs
doesnt matter where i go, they always do it
i have to say "LITTLE AMOUNT OF LETTUCE" and they just kind look funny at me and put lots on anyway...wtf

also the other thing about subway that bothers me is the fact that most places now they just throw the shit together sloppy and gross, when subway was new ppl took their time and made them nice and shiny and pretty for consumption now they're just a slop of food in bread :P

and wtf is up with toasted bread? wasn't the toaster invented in 1893?

Quiznos is better then Subway imo. Tho they are a little more pricer. That and at least in my area (NW US), bout every single one is operated my people who barely speak english. So I usually end up saying my order 2 or 3 times before they get it. =/

Tho the Double Angus Steak and Cheese Sandwhich is awsome. Especially when ya add lots of black olives and ask em (if they will) toast the steak strips first, then the sandwhich (lot better when the meat is warmed, not cold). That there sandwhich is the food of the gods I swear. ;)

Agreed shadow. It is very tasty, I'll have to ask them to toast the meat first next time.

Quiznos or blimpies is the best! I don't know if you can find quiznos anywhere but in the northwest though.

We have Quiznos in Virginia. Had an Angus Steak sub yesterday :D I also really like how they have the little sauce/hot pepper bar there too. I always grab a couple little cups of those.

Shrug, where I live (ny, li), subway is quite good. At least around my house ;p, the people take their time, everything nice and fresh and good looking, and they actually LISTEN to what I ask for (i.e little lettuce, just a bit of sause etc). Quiznos on the otherhand sucks around here, and blimpe I only ate at once, was good but haven't been there since because the people at my subway play hackysack ;p

i've been to subway's in 3 different states and every so often forget about the food and get somethign from there again.

the portion size sucks.
the quality of meat sucks- every single subway i have been to has had the worst quality meats i have ever tasted.
the bread IS good and is their only redeeming factor.

go to a Quality sub/grinder/hogie shop and the difference in portion size, quality for the price is amazing.

not one subway in my immediate area has lasted more than their lease length. because the stores are dead- the only one that has lasted even a few years is the one at the mall- and that one's food sucks(ate there once a year ago)

when i want a quality sub i goto the mom&pop type stores, they are better.

in my area-

roastbeef sub- lynnfield house of pizza- they cook the beef fresh daily to a nice rare color and if you time it right, you get a nice HOT rare roast beef sub- Yummy

land & sea in peabody and supremes in danvers are close 2nd and 3rds... Kelly's is very good too

nonroastbeef subs - santoro's in peabody square- one of the best subshops in the general area.(they do great catering too) occasionally you can net a prime rib lunch there for 7 bucks.

etc.. not one of my friends will eat at a subways

You guys have bad subways =(

I made friends with the entire night crew at the subway near my work. It takes longer to get out of there (because they love to shoo the bull with me and its hard to leave) but my sandwhichs are always made perfect and any extras/doubles are never charged.

Then the one near my house is run by a husband and wife from vietnam. Very nice people, always fresh food, they take big pride in the work they do. Amazing store.

I worked in the restaurant buisness from the time I was 16 through college for a total of about 7 years. And the above quote is the most important rule to know. Talk to em, be nice, shoot the shit with em, etc... Find a place you like and do this. They will inevitably start hooking you up and taking care of you. If after a couple months they don't, find another spot you like. If the place takes tips, hook them up as well. The places I frequent now know be by name and will often see my car pull in and have food or drink(bars) that I normally order already started or a drink already poured at my normal seat. Also, I rarely am charged for everything. But I also often tip 50-100%. Bottom line, treat the folks that make your food and drink well, and they will do the same. Nothing beats walking through the door of a crowded bar and having your drink ready by the time you make it to the bar while other folks are still standing around waiting to be served :D

Caveat: This doesn't work as well when the person serving you is a manager and/or owner. It's the folks that are just working for wage and tips that will usually hook you up. Age old unspoken rule of the restaurant buisness. I scratch your back, you scratch mine thing.

I found a sandwich shop up here when i moved to Cleveland.... I swear they make subway/quiznos taste like processed frozen, badly warmed over food.

Name of the Chain is Charley's Grilled Subs. Chicken Teriakki melts in your mouth... damn thats a good sandwich.

I dont know if they use a special mayo but its a little sweeter then the usual stuff and it makes it goood.

They put alot of extra mayo on there sampler subs to give away and it makes it even better.
