Fishing Rods as Weapons?

I just got Nat Pagle's Extreme Angler in a quest

It has much higher dps than the 2H mace my 48 shaman uses.



Does anyone know for sure if such an item could be used as an effective weapon?



The only thing I can think of is that it has no weapon skill associated with it (eg. 2H maces) so may not be effective, despite the DPS. What if my fishing skill was maxed out? Would fishing skill replace weapon skill?

I got one earlier today on my hunter. It's not really that good and isn't considered a melee weapon. It wouldn't let me use any of my melee skills and I put out some shitty dps with it.

I think it might be based on your fishing skill for hit/miss/power. Definitely an easy quest, though.

Non-weapon type weapons don't have any weapon skill, thus are totally ineffectual.

Heh, I hearthed into Org with my fishing pole still in hand (Big Iron Fishing Pole) and hit Gamon before I realized I didn't have a weapon. It hit him for over 200 damage and killed him in one hit. I've never hit anything for that much damage before, so on low-level stuff it might be fun. Never tried it during serious killing however.

It'll use your fishing skill as the attack skill. This decides toHit rolls and factors into toCrit calcs. However, it's not a melee weapon, so skills that require a melee weapon (Mortal Strike, etc) won't work with it.
