View Full Version : I've almost given up
Guess my computer don't like the new UI too much. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/images/emoticons/frown.gif ALT=":(">
newUI = TRUE - crash to desktop 5 - 30min later randomly.
newUI = FALSE - no crashes; runs like usual.
Ive done everything I think to do: scandisk, defrag, update vid driver (geforce3), then downgraded the vid drivers, switched resolutions, turned off background stuff. Turned off all the goodies like luclin models, light source, etc, increase datarate = 8...blah blah blah
I've given up hope and resorted to using just the old UI. /cry
any suggestions?
512ram, >1 gig HD, athlon, geforce3, cable modem, win ME
think its my virtual memory? what do I do?

Is it a custom skin you downloaded? some of these skins were released prior to a bazaar fix. this fix added a few new files that are missing in these early skins.
the symptoms are crash when you type /bazaar.
this may be unrelated, but the only problem I have had.

Nope. This happens with just the default UI.
/sigh I wont worry about it. I played EQ with old UI and was happy.

problem is old ui is going essentially bye bye once the newui is finished.
they will ONLY be supporting the newui once its done.

Make sure that you send VI an email on this if you have not already.
To me it sounds like a memory leak as you have the UI functional for awhile before it crashes.
Does it crash quicker in more populated zones? Or opening more windows causes it to crash quicker?

I know this sounds stupid, but my computer stopped crashing back to the desktop when I took out my soundcard. Yeah, it sucks to play with no sound, but it stopped whatever the problem was.

Not stupid at all. The Sound engine in EQ is one of the worst around, and it's never been updated.
VI even admits it's horriable and will most likely be going through a complete rewrite when they get around to fixing up that part of the game.

kurrlee - I havent really tested to see if it crashes in overpopulated zones or not. Funny thing is my old computer is running my bazaar mule trader dude when I'm sleeping, and I've not experienced any crashes to desktop, and as you know, bazaar these days is the worst zone to be in.
And no, I can be either in a 60player vindi raid, or just sitting in FP, doing nothing. Actually it seems like it crashes more while doing nothing /shrug.
I figure it has to be my vid card or sound card. I will test sound tonite. oops no I can't. PoS cable modem is also down <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/images/emoticons/mad.gif ALT=">:">
GD it!
ps thanks for the tips <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/images/emoticons/smile.gif ALT=":)">

What I had to do with one of my machines is add a text file to my Everquest directory. What I do is open up any *.txt file already in that directory with notepad and remove all the text in the file. Then I "Save as..." and save the file as NOSOUND.txt
BE SURE YOU DO NOT OVERWRITE YOUR OLD FILE
The next time you boot up EQ, it will not use the sound engine and that way you can keep your soundcard in your machine and not worry about it messing with EQ.

Couldnt you just turn the sound off in the options window? Or does EQ still do something with your sound card?

Well after weeks of frustration, it looks like its the freaking sound that has made me crash to desktop all this time! Tested it last nite without the sound, and only had 1 LD in 6hrs of intense fighting.
Will test again tonite, with everything on and maybe a new mod loaded in to see if this holds true.
Thanks again to the monkly community for helping me solve my stoopid problem. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/images/emoticons/smile.gif ALT=":)">
oh well, at least I can turn up some tunes to replace the EQ noises.
