View Full Version : A guide to posting in Tech Support

1. English Please – It’s not about being a dewdspeak nazi, or a grammar or spelling nazi. The better you’re able to communicate your problem the more likely you are to get an answer. Things like “d00d my l33t gfx card is teh sux0r plz help k thx!!1111!!!11” are likely to be ignored.

2. Be Specific – The more information you can put in your post about your problem, the better the chances you’ll get it resolved. Simply saying, “Help, I crash every time I zone into bazaar!” isn’t nearly as helpful as “Every time I zone into bazaar I crash to desktop. I’m running EQ in windowed mode while I IM with my wife at work and leech every Beatles album ever made from my guildmate’s mp3 collection.”

3. Tell us about your system – Try to list a few details about your computer. There’s no need to go overboard here but a good starting list would be:

Your Operating System

Your Processor and Speed

Amount and type of RAM

Your Video Card (if it’s a video problem also list your DirectX version)

4. Don’t demand answers – Some times your question will bring about more questions. People are busy, and many only check the boards once or twice a day. Posting a question, then asking 10 minutes later why no one has answered is grounds to have you tied up and dropped from the top of the clue tree. We’ll all watch hoping that you hit every branch on the way down.

If your pc is generating errors, include the error message. State the exact text the error gives. Most errors have been reported by someone else and they usually tell what they did to resolve it.

Specific information will get the problem resolved quicker.
