View Full Version : Drives Labeled Incorrectly

08-11-2003, 08:56 AM
I recently rebuilt my computer, and installed xp, but now my HD is labeled F: and my Zip is Labeled C:. This has only caused a couple really minor install problems that were fixed by using the browse option during the install, and everthing runs fine.

AMD 2600

Asus nForce2 Mobo

1 Gig RAM

Maxtor 40 gig HD

2 opticals

1 floppy

1 Zip

Running XP

Will this cause serious problems later?

Can this be fixed with out starting over?

A: Floppy

C: Zip

D: CD

E: DVD

F: HDD

It shouldn't cause any issues other than having a weird primary HD letter, and (if the drive letters changed after software was installed) oddities trying to uninstall stuff.

Yes, you can change the letters. Make sure you're logged into an account with administrator privledges and run Disk Management (c<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/images/emoticons/ohwell.gif ALT=":"> winntsystem32diskmgmt.msc in Win2k, maybe someplace different in WinXP. Let me know if you can't find it and I'll check when I get home).

After you run this, there will be a white listbox of drives above, and a large grey area below. On the left side of the grey area the disks will be listed down as Disk 0, CDRom 0, ect. Right click on this and "Change drive letter" will be one of the options. You may have to do a bit of juggling to get everything where you want it.

Be careful in disk management. You can break stuff in there.

no. in fact, it may add a bit of security. if you get a badly written virus that has to install in C, it wont be able to.

Can this be fixed with out starting over?

yes, but i am not sure how. disk management will let you change other drive letters, but i am pretty sure that it will not let you change the drive windows is working out of.

i did this myself, and quite enjoy not having a C

if you care: the cause of this is you had your hard drive plugged into the secondary IDE cable instead of hte primary, so when BIOS read what was where it found your other IDE stuff first. to fix this in the future plug your hard drive into the endmost (not middle) plug of the IDE cable, and have the IDE cable plug into the motherboard in the blue (primary. generally left if they are both black) plug

Miker is right about not being able to change the drive that windows is running from, but I did change my Zip Drive to Z: instead of C:. Some installs were trying to write to it. Now there is no C: on my system. Thanks for the help though.

The Windows XP setup has an interesting 'feature where it will read a ZIP drive as an actual Hard Drive, and since ZIPs appear higher in the Chain, if you have the ZIP drive hooked to the controller and powered at system startup, it WILL become your C: drive.

The only way to prevent this is make sure that when you start the Windows XP setup, you ONLY have the CD-Rom, Floppy, and the Hard Disk you want to become the C: system drive running. A friend of mine got a new system with a 120 GB main drive, but he decided to reformat and transfer his old 40 GB drive as well as a seperte data drive. Imagine his surprise (because of his HD cable select configuration) when lo and behold, when he ran the Windows XP setup, his older/solwer 40 GB drive was selected by XP to be the C: main system drive. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/images/emoticons/eek.gif ALT=":eek">

So, when you initially install XP, just have ONE HD, ONE CD-Rom, and however many Floopy drives you like (<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/images/emoticons/wink.gif ALT=";)"> ); and once the basic install is done, reconnect your extra hardware and let Windows XP discover and update itself to use the extra hardware.

your drives are probobly swapped on the eide channels...

idd say put a clean new drive on the master primary, change boot order in bios. then reinstall on the new drive.

viola fixed without having to make a boot disk....
