Some people have reported OpenGL performance hits using the 4496 driver vs. 4363. As an example, my system registers 2,100+ FPS in glxgears with 4363, but ~1,900 with 4496. This doesn't look like a whole lot but it made an impact in some of the more intense OpenGL games I have such as Vendetta and RTCW: ET. My screen would stutter slightly whenever I strafed my view.
Yet most people seem to be happy with 4496. It has corrected the issue many people had where their desktop would lock up intermittently if they had RenderAccel turned on.
The moral of the story is: if you are not having any specific issues while running 4363 don't change it. There are no performace upgrades in 4496 other than adding TwinView support. If you do update to 4496 and you get that performance hit you can re-download 4363 from the Linux Driver Archives on nVidia's site.
