View Full Version : Graphics Problems

I've been having some graphics problems lately, and i wonder if any of you can help me figure out what is happening.

I have two HDs on my system, and two OSs- windows ME on my small HD, and windows XP on the bigger one. I have windows xp all patched, all directx and video and sound drivers are up to date, and basically i want to switch to XP from ME. Now, ME runs just fine when i load it up, but any time i try to play a 3d game (some simple games work fine, such as starcraft), graphics go jaggy. On WC3, the intro screen is nothing but black with a few huge, jaggy polygons jutting across the screen. Performance goes down to about 2 FPS. When i load up half life, if it works, all textures in game are corrupted, usually pink and white fuzz on the walls and ground. I'm running an MX 420 GeForce 4, which is compatible with XP. I've even tried using the windows logo tested drivers, and it still won't work. If i load up DxDiag to test directx, and try direct draw tests, the white box will move, stop, move, stop, move, stop, all the way to the end of the test. If i try direct3d tests, the textures on the spinning cube are corrupted and my computer usually locks up.

Now, here's the weird tihng. If i try the tests within a few minutes after starting up XP, sometimes i can get all the way through the tests without a glitch. Sometimes i can do the tests 2-3 times in a row without locking up. But then, magically, i'll try again and all will fail. Can anyone help me out here? I thought perhaps it had to do with boot file, so i edited the boot file to make XP be the default startup OS (ME is my default right now) and that still did not work, and i almost fuxxored my computer. If anyone knows what the crap is up, please help me.

PS: I have tried the DX tests with 41 drivers, 43 drivers, and 21 drivers (from Nvidia.com).

hrm.

lemme guess, the ME hard drive is C?

if it is, that may be your problem. (not sure why though, just personal experience)

try removing the ME hard drive and freshly installing XP, patching and whatnot. than add it and configure booting. that may work

If i take out the C drive and make D the only HD on my system, my computer will not boot up, despite the fact that there is XP installed on D. It says that there are files missing, even though there aren't. I literally cannot boot up my computer if C drive isn't connected.

i would than reccomend connecting C, transferrring all important files from D to C, than reinstalling XP on D w/out C even connected

Texture corruption is usually a sign of overheated / damaged memory on your video card.

Presuming it happens in both OSes, I'd suggest finding a different video card and swaping out and see if that fixes it. If so, then buy a new video card and call it good.

Doesn't happen in ME <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/images/emoticons/frown.gif ALT=":("> I really don't want to shell out for a new card; the fact that it only happens in XP is what is bothering me.
