Human monk with AC1000 who feels a lot more fragile than I did pre-nerf. A monk who wonders what the class role is when I tank like a rogue but do less damage. But, whatever, perhaps it's just nerf paranoia.
... It also may be irrelevant.
I am going to hold out hope that VI has seen monks using PoP abilities, and gear, and seen that they *REALLY* are too powerful. That this nerf is more a re-alignment of the monk class based on the fact they will get a shot at armor that does not suck in PoP. That VI has realised motivating people to strive for crap armor wasn't a good idea, but that the current formula combined with good melee armor, that monks could use, would make us way too strong.
I'll only know when PoP comes out. If a level 30+ monk, the point at which our armor craps out, can get their hands on decent armor in PoP I will be so happy. Ideally a monk so equipped will be a reasonable tank, and a good source of DPS. The median point between rogue and tank. And at the high level there will be great armor that all melee can strive for. And a monk in this gear will be tough, but still balanced.
60AC +100HP pants, albeit off avatar of war, will cease to be an error and become the high end of what a monk can strive for. If that is the point of the patch then I welcome it. I hate having to lust after ALL/ALL raid drops because my class armor is intentionally awful in an attempt to "balance" the class. Let me earn the armor I need to play my role at that level.
There is a slight fear in my heart though. I could also see PoP having no armor for non-uber, sub 50 monks. I could see PoP monk armor being another embarassment like velious monk armor is. I could even see monks being actively penalised in content because "they've had it good for so long". But i'm not going to think about it till PoP comes out, because under those conditions it would be extremely hard to be motivated to continue as a monk. Sure, monk FD will still have value in pulling, but what a perversion of the class (and my guild has a skilled pull team already).
(off tangent useless story)
I'm a noobie who started a new monk on a new server to join a great guild. So i've been focusing on levelling so I can contribute, as a result my gear sorta sucks for the most part. So I was really happy when I got the chance at a set of Thurg booties. Cool, velious armor, leet! Something I can be proud of wearing.
Hm.. why are the other monks making jokes. I didn't get it, untill I checked the stats after the raid. OMG, these boots have 2 AC more than the wu's I bought for 10 plat off a crafter. It will cost me how much in plat to claim them? They have +1 to all resists? I get breathed on by dragons what the hell is that going to do? These things are utter, utter crap.
End result, after being happy on raid, was that I passed on them. Even if the guild gave me the quest gems I still don't consider the boots worth the effort of getting. Sure, I have a thurg bracer now, but I certainly don't wear it. If part of monk balance was all monk armor being crap then it sucked. I don't want to have to construct a mish-mash of whatever item balance mistakes get by VI.
