Have just started an iksar monk, and thought i would purchase some shurikens to practice throwing and to help with pulling, but seem to be having problems with them either the mob's to far away or too close. I put points into my throwing skill hoping this would help but nope nothing. i just cant seem to throw my Shuriken's. Still have a nice stack of 20 . Does anyone one have any hints tips on what to do. or know what i am doing wrong. Oh these are just your basic buy from merchants type.

you have to get within range of the target, if you are too close or too far you cannot hit the target. I believe the range on those shurikens are fairly low, try going for something higher than 100 or so, it might work a little better.

You also need to take that item out of the ammo slot. Can't throw with it there, and I believe it gives the OOR message when you try.

Do the Nexus Sicons still work to get skill up?

I don't know if its fixxed but their is a spot in Great devide dead center North of the Nexus Scion right before you start stepping up the hill where you can hit the Nexus Scion...that will give you skill ups. If you are seeing "You tried to hit the nexus spires" or something different then it doesn't work.
If you get rooted by a caster while dueling is about the only time I ever used it for damage.
even if you miss while pulling it still gives you agro.

Shurikens suck. They only have a range of like 50.. so most of the time by the time your close enough to throw you agro the mob. Katta sells some shurikens that have a range of 70.. not sure what else there is we don't have too much of a storebought selection. If you know a blacksmith or are one, make some forged throwing javelings. They are stackable and have a range of 205. Untill you can summon your own from quest wrist they are the way to go I think. They are a bit heavy 2 stones each but store them in weight reducing bag and it's not so bad.

On a side note if you just want to raise your skill load up on the shurikens and pound on the nexus scions.

If you are throwing a regular shuriken at a mob that requires magic weapons to kill, (I get the Invunerable message) is it still possible for skill to go up? Or do you actually have to have a chance of hitting the mob?

2 things:
Thurgardin sells velium shuriken that are higher range, and, a little more costly. My advice would be to either work on smithing (low trivial, but a tad heavy for a young monk) for Javelins, or work on Fishbone darts.
Here's a link to the page with the Javelin recipe (scroll down to "forged Javelin")

The important thing to remember is your Skill level really doesn't matter... All you want to do is agro the mob and bring it to the group. Missing will still agro. In 60 levels my throwing ::just:: hit 155, and Yes, you can get skill ups from hitting a magic-only mob with a non-magic item, i get skill-ups with my antonian Javelins all the time.

For cheap and easy skill-ups, find a bored monk who happens to have any of the three velious bracers, and see if they will summon you a few packs of shurikens. They have longer range than storebought, and cost nothing but a 30 second cast time for a pouch full of 80 of them. In case the monk is very nice, and decides to whip you up 4 packs or so, be sure and have some pack space in your inventory.
Once you have these, go find xp groups that are fighting things blue to you, and ask if they mind if you stand off to the side and toss shurikens at their mobs. If they agree, find out who their MA is, and assist them, in case they are doing some sort of crowd control. If you break their mezzed mobs, they might not be so happy to let you continue. In a situation like this, always err on the side of caution, i.e., don't assist and throw until they are all beating on the mob.
