You are far better off hunting for cash and buying a weapon. At your level, I think I'd focus on trade skill items - spider silks, spiderling silks, and anything else the tradeskillers need in the bazaar.

What should I look to purchase? Right now I am using a level one club from a skelly. I don't care how much damage it does, just that I can use it on blues to increase my 1HB.

fighting baton. Pick up a polished steal ulak to work that h2h as well. Both could be had very very cheaply

Yeah check out NPC vendors in Towns and in The Bazaar. I had found a polished steel ulak for 2pp at an inn in East Freeport. Chances are you will also find a nice 1hb. Maybe someone in bazaar will have an ok 1hb for sale for pretty cheap.
