View Full Version : A question on the role of a monk?

08-08-2003, 10:57 PM
What is(are) the best role(s) for a monk to play in a group, I started one and am only playing him because I enjoy the character, not to be uber. So is there a regular role that monks are looked to in groups? thanks in advance.

In short, we are a Rogue Light, who can pull now and then.

Thanks for prioritizing Class Balance for melees, SOE.

At this point all of our roles are nothing but a memory. So, move from the front of the mob and help beat the snot out of it. We are dps now, and nothing more.

On occasion monks pull, however that job is now better done by bards, clerics and the like.

Pulling is still a Monkly role well into the 50s. Sure there are times that other classes are better suited for it but Monks still have the rep of knowing what they're about, at least on my server, and so still get asked to pull by default.

We're also useful for Corpse Recovery.

Other than that, stand behind the mob and smack it around like a snot-nosed Halfling, use feign where necessary to drop aggro back on the main tank.

yeah Id say until mid 50's your still going to be asked to pull. Once you start hitting the tougher Pop zones it will be someone that can pac, or a bard. I still get asked to pull in pop but nothing extravagant. Just trash mobs.

Actually, you might be surprised how often you will still be asked to pull Post 60, and/or in PoP. Believe it or not, a Bard isn't always available, Clerics want to save manna for heals, and Druids and Rangers ain't comfortable doing it. In PoV/BoT groups, I'm still asked to pull 8 out of 10 times, so Pulling is not a role that has completely dissapeared.

So, as you level up, get into a pulling mentality and look over some of the Pulling Strategies threads in the Guides section. If you manage t get a rep as a good puller, it will help you get groups in the higher level areas.

Can Bards pull better then Monks atm? Yep. But when they aren't around, and you have a Slower (say a Shaman), but not a Mezzer (Enchanter); you'l go thrown in the one with the directive "Bring singles please."

So, again, prctise pulling and get good at it as you level up.

Guess the only suck thing I've noticed is since the advent of cleric/bard/druid pulling is that groups tend to get annoyed that splitting can sometimes take a bit of time. Especially on the initial break if it's a tight camp. Had people complain in group that I'm pulling too slow, but they just seem to not understand that splitting a tightly packed group of mobs. They usually stop complaining once the camp is broke and it's continuous though <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/images/emoticons/wink.gif ALT=";)">

Lol well I am not sure what my main use is anymore, since hitting 50 or so, i haven't been asked to pull as much because other classes are more suited for it. I have spent and farmed 50~75k in gear that is all HP and STA, well now that I dont pull as often I look back and think "Wow I all that money for gear that doesn't mean a danm thing" I look at my gear, I am lvl 56 still use a IFS, I have like 130 STR lol, but all together I get 500~600 HPs off my gear between raw and STA, well now all I am is DPS for most groups.... soo I need to be off to sell some of my gear to replace it with more STR and get a better weapon.

Well... it appears that our class defining ability is mend.... so therefore our class's role is to sit out of battle and heal ourselves for 25% every six minutes.

Guys, take the whining to the regualar board

Monks role right now is pulling, some people wait till they are asked before starting to pull, when I join a group I immediatly say "Let me know when ready for a pull".

Monks do near Rogue Damage when not pulling

Monks can off tank most mobs up to PoP experience groups rather well.

Monks *are* the underdog class, so if you don't believe that the class isn't fun enough to play to justify that then you might be better off playing something else.

I must say though that the monk is my favorite class to play
