View Full Version : New to monk...
I havent played eq for a few months. So i want a fresh start. i have a lvl 50 pally on Rodcet and thats been my main forever..i havent play any other class above 20. But one thing i was always wanting while playing my pally was 1. to be able to solo...i know melee class's wont be able to solo all that well but i like melee class's. 2. MORE DAMAGE FASTER!!! i hated watching my damage. You Slash a Drolvarg rager for 150 dmg. you miss. you miss you miss you miss you hit for 30. you miss you hit for 21 you hit for 45....my point is..i always wanted to do fast consistent damage and that aint gonna happen with a slow 2h sword. I remember when my pally was lvl 6 or so...he was running in butcherblock mounts and he ran a cross a monk in a fight with a dwarf guard. Ill always remember that fight. He owned the guard. Ive been reading about monks ever since. So i want to start one on Rallos Zek. I have heard many things about starting stats..some say agi some say str some say stam. I would like info on What stats to put my starting points into and what type of gear to look for at lower lvls. And anything that would be useful to a young monk. All help is appriciated.
P.S. What race is better? I was thinking iksar for the high Agi and regen, but they dont have the newb armor quests which kinda sucks. but that wont matter when im 50 thanx for the info.

I would revisit your Pally. A pally can solo a lot better than a monk these days. Truely sweet weapons for the pally/sk are everywhere and cheap to get...With all the expansions, Paladins have done nothing but get stronger as a soloing class, plus have an easier time finding groups than monks.

Put all points into STA.
Look for gear with pure HP early on.
On a PvP server, resists will be very important.
Get yourself some haste and decent weapons.
Regen is godly at lower levels, but the XP penalty associated with it becomes more pronounced over time.
Monks are fun, especially at low levels - but if you want a good solo class pick a caster.

yes Blaz is right, put all points into stam you wont regret it later. Also one thing to remember FD will NOT work there
Good luck on your travels just keep searching here and you will find most answers to your questions.

A monk can solo quite well, My monk solo'd all but about 3 lvl's of xp until 45 and then still alot til 51-52. People have this issue of monks suck after a few patches ago and say this and that they and they cant do this or do that, BS!! Their mind set has made them not be able to adapt to their char.
Monks rock period, and IMO they are the best class in the game.

By all means start a monk and have fun, but if you're looking for a melee that solos and DON'T have a fungi to stick on your monk, try a beastlord out as well. Even with very basic gear you'll be pleasently surprised (well once you get past L9 and get your pet).
An untwinked BL solos about as well as a rather twinked monk past L15 or so, and a well twinked BL solos about as well as an uber twinked monk.

Agi gives you a little bit more AC & helps you learn defensive skills.
Dex gives you a very slightly better proc rate on weapons, helps you learn weaponskills faster and (I think) has some effect on how much you crit (once you get the crit AA). It also helps you learn to fletch.
The only things that really, really matter stat-wise (it's always good to have them all nice and high don't get me wrong) are AC and hitpoints (either Sta based or directly added). That's what I'd be aiming for anyway.
