View Full Version : My theory on the monk nerf
It has been bothering me that monks in uber guilds dont seem to have been nerfed, then i realized they had, they just don't see it yet. My premise is that verant removed about 200 ac under the covers from the listed total ac. A monk with 1500 ac would have an effective 1300 ac after the patch but it would still be above the soft cap or around 1200ish. Ahh you see where I am going. The only thing that makes sense is that the ac softcap is going to be raised substatially in PoP. Thus no monk with ac equal to a plate class can compete because they will effectively have 200 ac lower. The monks with lower ac noticed it alot right now. The monks with higher ac wont notice it until PoP.

Since you are obviously wrong, I don't think so.
From not too long ago before the nerf a monk with 1050ac and a monk with 1250ac took the same amount of damage on the average hit. (this was parsed.) Yet the monk with 1250ac still takes 10% more damage than before.
If they had 'just' removed an effective 200ac off of the monks then he would still be taking the same amount of damage on average as the monk with 1050ac before the patch, which means he would see no change. But, again from parses, he sees an average damage increase of 10%.

It's also possible that VI has raised the armor softcap for true tanks. Remember they said "may tank better under certain circumstances"? That would mesh with the fact that a raise in useable AC would still only affect some mobs, the ones now in mitigation range.
So I suspect it is a double hit relative to the true tanks.
Cue the chorus of "We wear plate! you deserve it".

How do you figure 200ac? I'm good with alot of reasoning in eq but numbers in eq i cant keep concentration on.

-I- think the "certain circumstances" are when they are in a pure tanking situation (in front of the mob, being a meatshield).... would fit their intent, no?

Missed those parses but interesting. I'm curious what the 'average' hp's of a monk with 1250+ ac vs the monk with ~1000 ac. Perhaps that's why the nerf 'feels' less severe to those with better gear...

Why are we the only class that has to find out what the nerf is on our own, while everyone else is black in white?
Team manaburn nerfed by needing a full min between manaburns
Team mod rod makes rods that can only be used once every 5 min
Team CH can only heal max 7500 hp
Team monk "I've got a secret I wont tell"

My theory is maybe they don't want the warriors and other complaining classes to know what they did either. Personally, I have noticed a slight difference in soloing spiders in VL. I have 1050 AC 2260 hps and 28 AA pts, 2 in CA, 1 in CS, and I have PE. Maybe my abilities are helping me overcome the change rather than my AC? I obtained PE right before the nerf, so it is difficult to say the actual bonus of that Ability.

well my theory is that the only problem verant was having with monks has nothing to do with monks being to uber as this nerf proves. i think that the only ones hurt by this are the middle lvl player and the casual player. this is just who verant wanted nerfed . i never for a moment felt then or feel now that monks were unbalanced and im very suprised at how many oin this board excepted this as a truth. what verant really saw as unbalanceing is how many monk there were playing . to many monks so they cut the feild down from the middle levels which i beleive they preceive as most of them as alts anyways and unlikely to cause people to quit over it.now when vi was faced with this problem they couldn't very well tell the truth that they were going to make a whole class get pissed so they will quit playing but still give them money. if you will recall they did exactly the same thing to druids a year and some change ago and for the same reason.
