View Full Version : MSS or wait on REBB?
So i just got Sol Ro flagged 2 nights ago so i'm hoping to get a weapon upgrade soon. I'm praying for the REBB.
I'm currently using GSo4W. From what people say, REBB is super-common and the MSS is pretty rare.
My guild is not DKP, we have a loot council that appoints loot. My question is, in my situation what would you do if MSS drops before i see a REBB? Would you try to get the MSS as your upgrade? or would you pass on it and hope you get an REBB soon, since REBB is clearly superior. Any advice is helpful, thanks.

Either are an upgrade to a GSo4W. Go for whichever drops first if you are not bothered which one you get.
However, keep in mind you need consistently high attack rating to make the most of the MSS, so if you don't buff up past 1500 or 1600 attack, trying for the REBB may give a better result.

I would take the first thing that drops (and did). I ended up eventually getting both because we had two REBBs rotting (I believe a druid looted the other).
I use the MSS for DPS (it seems better with higher atk and/or fire resistant mobs) and REBB when I don't have raid buffs and/or need the HPs.

I'm lookin' through you... where did you go?

Similar predicament here. I think I'll hold out for the REBB. It seems a bit more common, I much prefer the look, and I also don't like the speed of the MSS... fun sometimes maybe, but quick death if the mob turns.
</p>
Once you start doin the minis you will find both MSS and REBB are wayyy common. Like the WLK/EM of early pop.
I owned both within a week. MSS are already rotting, I cant convice a few of our monks that it is good DPS the 20 delay/low DB scares them off.

Picked up my MSS the other night and the parsings are very nice, we use DKP, and technically I'm an alt so I only get half, so this will probably be my weapon for a long time, I'm very happy with it.
I do lost a lot of HPs from my duel wield combo however, so there are times when I will still be using the duel wield combo.

REBB is much more common. Take whichever comes first. Odds are it'll be the REBB anyways. MSS is fine though if you get that one. It competes with the REBB well enough.

Both would be nice... but MSS has been very rare for us. We have roughly the same number of Riz vs. Jiva fights. In that time all 65 raiding monks and a few beastlords have a REBB. We've had one MSS drop.
I'd love to score an MSS. A big cold proc added to it would make it my Sol Ro farming weapon of choice.

Well, I was outbid on the REBB last night and next target was Rizlona. Of course the MSS dropped and I wasn't gonna let it rot, so now I have one. It's no doubt better DPS than the GSoFW, but identical stats basically. I'm still praying for an REBB, but this will at least increase my DPS until then. If we do Jiva at least twice more, and with some luck, I should get an REBB.
btw. our drop rate so far looks like this:
Jiva killed 3 times, gotten 2 REBB
Rizlona killed 4 times, gotten 3 MSS
(no doubles on either yet)
At this point, MSS doesn't seem all that rare.

Like a staff with the ends shod in mithril. Nice look really.
"Guess it goes to show that corpse humping monkies who live in vans down by the river can be edumucational too."</p>
For my guild: 6 Rizlona, 1 MSS. 7 or 8 Jiva, 4 or 5 REBB (I stopped paying attention too much).
</p>
Whenever I went throught the trouble of getting full out attack buffs with MSS it ALWAYS out-damaged REBB. Rebb has a better look, and is better for tanking (not that monks do that often), but really...the MSS is a damned good wep, and nothing to be ashamed of having.

MSS outdamages the ReBB by a good bit as long as your atk is high enough, but i was curious could anybody tell me at what point the MSS starts to pull ahead of the ReBB atk wise.
Its not hard to grab a few ranger buffs and hit 1400atk or so, but would the MSS outdamage the ReBB at that point, or would i have to push even further to 1500 or 1600 atk ?
As a monk im always after the better dps, rather it be ReBB or a MSS.
</p>
Don't have any numbers, but I was in a PoE exp group the other day with 1550atk, damage output was substantial. And I usually run around 1300atk.... was a noticable difference. Using MSS btw <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/images/emoticons/tongue.gif ALT=":b">

At ~1200atk unhasted on Kaeon, MSS was 5dps less than REBB (and GSo4W was 5dps less than MSS). My guess is if you have any attack buffs whatsoever or are fighting something that's FR, MSS will outdamage REBB.
I personally haven't had any problems with ripostes, though there are certainly mobs that I'd favor REBB over MSS because even one or two ripostes would be a bad thing - mostly the mobs that have huge DPS and/or the MA can't get good aggro on.

Monks have already done all the bitching a class possibly can, so they are pretty much out of steam. I doubt [SOE] can do anything that can phase those that were lvl 60 monks at the time of the mitigation nerf.

I hear ya Lyndar. Think I have been to 10 or 12 Jiva slayings. In that time we had 3 REBB's. I have really begun to hate him also.
I have the MSS and the damage is pretty nice once you get your attack buffed up. From the parses I've seen, it starts to outdamage REBB up around 1600. Don't arm-wave it like many do because of the low delay and the 1-hander damage bonus. If you can get your attack up, it's pretty good.
The hitpoints and overall stats aren't that great though. And in experience groups, it's hard to see your attack get up to the level where it balances out. I find myself using my Battlefists and Grandmaster's Mace most of the time now. The proc augs I added to each and investment in Ambidexterity makes a pretty noticeable difference for me, but I haven't really parsed it. Finally getting around to working on PB. If I'm not raiding, I am usually sleeping or doing something stupid, so I haven't had much opportunity to work on AA.
Someday Jiva will quit taunting me. Maybe.

I would pick up the first that drops. I passed on the mss, because I figured I would get a rebb. But, the rebb only dropped a couple of times, and they went to other monks. Then, my guild stopped raiding minis all together. So, I have no chance at getting one now. Same deal happened with me waiting for Zha's. So, I'm in PoTime with a Witness of Hate Greatstaff.
</p>
Thanks for all the reply's. I think i'll put in my bid for the first one i can get. I'm hoping it will be the REBB though. So far my knowledge my guild only has 1 MSS, and 2 REBBs. and we've killed both Jiva and Riz at least a half dozen times.

I hate Jiva for dropping the ring because
1) I got one off the first Jiva kill.
2) I'm using a Rotting Fist and a WLK
Most of the hate comes from part 2.
Plus, it's frustrating... I'm reasonably high on the list for getting one, and I just know that he's going to drop 2x REBB when I can't be on.

We Killed Riz last night and she dropped 2 MSS. I got one,the other went to a BST.
I wanted the Bamboo staff from Jiva , the graphic is nice, but i am very happy with this staff. With 41% haste item, and enc haste this thing goes non stop, criting for over 300 easily. Grats to any mnk/bst who is lucky enough to get it.
Jiva 2 days b4 dropped 2 Bamboo staffs <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/images/emoticons/eek.gif ALT=":eek"> but they were awarded to other monks in the guild.
So like they said, what ever one you can get it dont matter they are both sweet staffs.

For you guys who have Caen's and MSS or REBB or all 3, where does it fall in the mix?
CL
</p>
From all I've read here, it's situational. All in all, they are about even... it just depends on whether your in exp group or raiding, and also where your ATK rating is, whether you need stats, whether you are purely dps or also pulling, etc. Lots of factors, but I'd say in general they are all about even.
(I just think the REBB looks cool... that's why I want one <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/images/emoticons/tongue.gif ALT=":b"> )

Caen's {with Ykesha proc augm} for tanking, in normal LDoN adventures for example or soloing.
I use it also when I pull only (no fight at all) but it happens rarely.
Bamboo {with Permafrost proc augm} for raid or group when for pure DPS with minimum aggro.
This is my "default" equiped staff, I love its look.

I'm loving it. I'm glad that i didn't see the MSS first, because it would have been damn tempting. We killed Jiva last Thursday and another monk got REBB, but then there was another patch on friday (like 3rd patch of the week). So late night after our guild raids we had about 30 people left and went and did Jiva and...SPLAH!....REBB is mine.
