Im loving this game, of course it will have its haters (mainly the people that get all pissy over a change in shoelace color or something). There are some pretty big changes for balancing. There is so much content to be unlocked in this game its crazy. I havent been this into a fighting game in a looooong time.

There is a profile system that keeps track of your wins/losses/ and the Koins you have accrued while playing.

Basically you win Koins (money) for fighting. There are several different kinds of currency ie. gold, ruby, platinum ect. There is a section called the Krypt that has ALOT of headstones all can be opened at different prices (numbered from AA to ZZ). Some are just a picture while others are secret characters or costumes.

www.mk5.org has great forums for info on which headstones are what(gotta reg real quick to see forums).

Another fun thing is, you can take your memory card over to a friends house and bet Koins on a -VS- match against them. Now it hurts more than just your pride when you get owned by a friend =P. You can also do it with different profiles on the same machine/card ie if you and a friend have been playing on the same system. (its profile based).

There is a Konquest mode which takes you through each character showing you their basic moves ect, good for me to get use to all the new moves. It even has a practice mode (like tekken).

The only downside Ive seen on the forums is people are grumbling about only 1 fatality per char (atleast thats all that is known right now). There is a big debate about if more are hidden still.

I could care less about the 1 fatality per, it truly is a GREAT game.

I've unlocked about half of the krypt so far, got all the characters and finished konquest completely. working on beating arcade with everyone and earning more koins.

I hate people whining about the fatalities sucking too..these are the little punks that actually LIKED the mk3-4 fatalities and all the other stupid -alities that started plaguing the game.

The fatalities in this are a return to the roots for the most part (quan chi's is pretty damn lame): Creative, but to the point, and brutal. Not silly. Not to mention the motions to do them. I can remember MK1 and some MK2 fatalities to this day, just because they were relatively intuitive and easy to do, not like later where they were like 7 button presses and it could be any button. these are all 3-4 directions, followed by one of the four attack buttons. I already have about half of them memorized just from casual use. That's how it should be.

is the game still "dial a combo" based?

The Yanger
11-23-2002, 12:46 AM
...to call MK 'dial a combo' based is trite. only MK3 was like that.

This is like soul calibur actually, mixxed with a bit of DoA (combos are done like DoA, which means that the timing is significantly harder than in MK3, which means it's a real combo system, made up of real moves that you can string together most any logical way)

I've never been a 3d fighter fan (when I want a fighter game I normally perfer 2d neo geo/street fighter/old MK games) but this one does rock. Not at the top of my to buy list but I'll defenitly pick it up sometime.

I definitely want to try this game out. I've gotten alot of enjoyment out of MK's in the past.

Well I unlocked all the koffins, got a about half the characters left to beat arcade mode with though, and i finished konquest a long time ago.

Hoping there's some more awesome hidden stuff, i mean it IS MK after all, and boon has given some pretty wild hints. Supposedly someone saw on the official site something like 'hard, 15', 0 deaths'..I tried hard under 15 minutes without dying, but then I lost to moloch, stupid piece of crap. Didn't bother trying again because it takes way too long, I mean you're talking about being at 9 minutes by the time you get to moloch, to lose then is just annoying (sucks cause once you beat him quan chi and shang tsung are just like every other CPU opponent..heck, I've beaten MAX without dying, just gotta do it on hard)

Well I picked this game up yesterday after work. It is fun and I do like the way you can switch between styles on the fly. It is a great game, but so far I personally don't think it is as fun as DOA3. However that is all relative because while I would give DOA3 a 9 out of 10, I would give MK A a 8 out of 10 at this early stage. That rating might change once I have had more time to play it (Yay long weekend coming up!).

Well just saw a segment on Today on Channel 4 about this game... Bashing it pretty good, but funny thing was after seeing the game I now want to get it...

The Yanger

Channel 4?

oh, on Today, ok, NBC? whatever.

I assume you mean they were talking smack about the fact that it's 'so amazingly violent' or whatever...I can't believe people still trip over mortal kombat. it's 10 years old guys, it hasn't gotten any bloodier.

If they were actually talking about gameplay...the day I listen to a (bad) morning show for game advice is the day I shoot my face off with a shotgun. Every legitimate game rag loves the game and I've got to agree, it's the best Mortal Kombat around.

I was reading about the different fighting styles you can use per fighter. It's a pretty good idea (Hapkido, Tai Chi, etc.). I'll probably pick up this game soon.

The Yanger

I dont find different styles all that amazing, I mean when you get down to it they just are modifiers to give you different attacks (and to make longer combos), except the weapon styles, which do more damage but cause you to take more damage.

11-30-2002, 12:20 PM
okay how do you do the power up thing ?

i can't do it

and moloch is the devil .....

The Yanger
11-30-2002, 01:38 PM
which system are you using? Special Move or 'attack 5' its sometimes called, is the extra moves that change with your style/character. IE: power up, impale, taunt, etc.

They're alot like Personal Actions in SF3. Forward+special is throw, and for kitana impale is back+special instead of just special.

You need to be in the correct style, and simply hit the special button with no direction.

11-30-2002, 04:19 PM
What character in the game do you play the most?

JAX! JAX! JAX!

My favorites are Kitana and Nitara, but I'm best with Kung Lao, he's just a ninja fast bastard. The 2 extra secret characters are amusing, though, the guy in the blue suit is really really good.

And yes, Moloch is the devil.

EDIT:Oopsie, forgot sig no work now.

Scorpion, Sub-Zero and Raiden (reminds me of when I was young hehe).

Mokap and Sonya! Tae Kwan Doe (sp?) is the best fighting stance! Kenshi, Jax, and Kung Lao are good, too. The worst is that fat guy, what's his name? Bo Ray or something? He is so slow, and he has no good moves

Bo'Rai Cho. I hate him because he's a piece of crap, but he's not the end all of suckness.

Jax=BEST. OWNIJ. PERIOD.

his two non-weapon styles are great (his tonfas suck though), and his special moves are all great.

Seabass
12-11-2002, 06:17 AM
yea this has got to be the first MK where jax hasnt sucked

and its easy to beat the game at any level with him, just piston punch repeatedly and you will almost never lose :P

12-11-2002, 01:41 PM
Scorpion and Frost > all.

seriously though, hapkido destroys everything except tae kwon do, Pi Gua kinda sucks but is great for comboing in and out of, and ninja sword is fun, he has a really really easy to do 50%ish combo out of ninja sword stance.

Frost just kicks ass. both of her styles, while they can be hard to learn, are really good at rolling combos from damn near any position. She also ganked Sub's low slide, and her freeze attack is blocked low, so its really easy to change it up repeatedly and keep your opponent off balance.

Ending with frost is painfully lame though.

Frost is better than subbie for sure, but hapkido isn't that great =p

Scorpion and Kenshi are both just good because of the sword, one of the few characters where I'd say the weapon styles are better tahn the normal ones.

FYI combo he's talking about I BELIEVE is the very easy 4,1,1,3..3..4,1,1

oh...and Jax was VERY good in MK2.

Im pissed now. Im sick of everyone dying when I beat the game with em. I got so irritated, I played through with Kung Lao figuring they wouldnt dare kill him. They didn't. But damnit, this is worse than twisted metal black. blah

And twisted metal black SUCKS.

Twisted metal 2, that had THE BEST endings.

yes, we did, to make up for 3 and 4.

12-18-2002, 02:22 PM
i liked 3 more than 2, but I hated 4 with a passion.

But what I hate more than anything is Moloch. Hes utterly retarded, requires next to no skill to beat, yet only once have I ever beaten him on my first try. With Scorpion even, cause Hapkido rules.

Moloch is the same as every MK miniboss.

Stupid, annoyingly powerful, trivially easy when you cheap him.

BTW, hapkido sucks. Scorpion is VERY good, but I'll give you a hint: its not cause of hapkido.

Scorpion, Kenshi, and Jax are the 3 characters I can smoke moloch with at will.

Piston punch, repeat.

or

4, 1, 1, 3..3..4, 1, 1, 3... repeat

12-19-2002, 05:06 AM
ill kick your ass with just hapkido any day Yang.

as much as I say hapkido this and hapkido that, scorpion rocks cause hes a really well put together, easy to learn hard to master kinda character.

Besides, hapkido rocks.

I just bought this game and it is good, not as good as dead or alive 3 but good. DoA3 just has a more natural control feel to it and not just a bunch of button pressing to it.

One fact that I have not noticed anyone talking about is the background sounds in the crypt where you open the coffins. 2 sounds caught my attention. there is a sound that is just like the dying sound of a spider in EQ when you kill it. the other sound is the sound from the Zombies in Unrest, the half whistle half whisper noise. I could swear that these sound are imported from EQ. If anyone else has noticed this please post, I am curious as to the reason for it.

There's all kinds of crazy things in the krypt. I haven't been to gamefaqs in awhile, but there's also some other wierd speech that when you clean it up says crap, and a ninja running around the rafters or some such.

the 1 player mode seems quite enjoying, the 2 player mode is unbalanced though

I'd pwn joo with Raiden, Yang. Staff and Jujutsu are teh win. The lowsweep/headsmash combo with the staff, combined with his "Shocker" grab and long combo from his basic style that ends up in staff own pretty much anyone.

Though, I must agree, Jax rules, but wtf is up with Drahmin? It's like....they took a whole bunch of special moves from other characters, gave him some and then no combos to speak of.

yea thats what pissed me off about the game. yea theres tons of stuff to unlock but 1/2 of the coffins are filled with junk. ooo look some dude that did the fighting animations for scorpion. too bad they didnt put anything cool in em like unlockable fatalaties or something like that. some of the fatalaties are lame, like the dude (forget his name, havent played it in so long) that stretches their neck. thats the lamest ever.

Wrong. Misc stuff is horrible because it makes you go, "oh great i just wasted 2 hours getting koins to unlock absolute junk". MK has been a gigantic dissapointment since the first one anyway.

which makes you NOT an MK fan.

How can you even say that? MK2 was the best MK, MK1 was only 'cool' because of the blood and secrets and such. MK2 was actually a great game.

I dunno about you, but if you manage to NOT SUCK TOTAL ASS, it doesn't take that long to get mass amounts of koinage. Just bust through the game on very hard, you'll get a ton of everything.

02-19-2003, 07:46 PM
No MK1 was cool because my parents were all like "You guys arent going to play that game its too violent!!" to my brother and I. Then we got it and hid it from them and they never found out. Besides that youre right, im not a MK fan, you shouldnt have to be to enjoy one of their games though. Like you with the FF series, you seem to hate just about every one of them, thats me with the MK series.

03-02-2003, 09:24 AM
Come on now, Sonya is hardcore, her styles are fantastic, if you land her little dust move you can set up uber damaging combos with ease, and her Kali Sticks are the best weapons in the game in my opinion. I also love Reptile, his styles are pretty dope, especially crab and he has that crazy ass sword.
