View Full Version : Changing Pet to "Pulling" window.
I had an idea about changing the Pet window in a specialized Pulling window.
Things We would include.
Target
Ranged attack button
2 slots of inc buttons(as I am double pulling a lot, and would be good easier to assign mobs to each group)
2 slots for MA/SA
cant think right now what else or how to change it. Any ideas would be good. I am going to start reading up on all this UI stuff and see if I can make something, although someone else feel free to make some also.
--also wondering if we can change the spell icons and spellbook into some more useful for monks.

This idea would rock except that you wouldnt be able to bind the Incoming keys to any keyboard keys, you'd have to use your mouse. I dunno bout any of you, but I always pull with both hands on keyboard.

I have ASDF and my Keypad mapped to movement.
I use 1-0 for my Hotkeys, never use a mouse for that. I even rarely use a mouse for movement these days.
Much easier to get around using the keyboard. I'll use the mouse when I need quick turn movements ( like coming back from a pull ) or when I need to look up or down.
Other than that, mouse is only used to play with INV and windows.

Interesting. The turn speed without the mouse is just so slow to me that I never want to use it. I use mouselook constantly, and strafe a lot. I rarely take my right hand off the mouse except to chat. I use the "WASD" setup from the old Doom/Quake days. Not that I ever quit playing that stuff hehe. Soldier of Fortune 2 & America's Army (Operations) == fun, fun, fun. =)
CL

http://jumpspot.net/eq/mendbug.gif

Mouselook is definitely superior to keyboard for changing direction. I use wasd for forward/left/back/right and the mouselook for "steering" as I pretty much strafe constantly. Turn, move, it's all one fluid ongoing motion. It's obvious (to me at least) when someone is using keyboard only movement because their movements are jerky with lots of stopping and slow turns, then movement again.
The only drawback to mouselook is it sometimes makes hotkeys a little difficult to access unless they are handy to my left hand (right hand is mouse). So, I've moved change view to "f", attack to "q", duck to "b" and nearest npc to "tab". My most frequently used hotbox keys are on the 1-5. In my mind at least, superior, precise movement is more important than having right hand access to the keyboard. With mouselook it's like "I think and it happens". With keyboard movement, everyone always appear to be "waiting"

Zi, I use a pretty similar setup,
wasd for movement, strafing most times.
q for autoattack
e for targest nearest
z for duck
x for sit
c for con
and most hotkeys i normally use are 1-5
hehe, hands rarely leave the mouse. I think this comes from old FPS days, I know all my friends who play EQ use thier FPS setups for the most part, and the mouse for mouselook.

I imported my Quake3/UT config to EQ.
You can always tell who the FPS players are by watching folks move.
We were in Aary pit and had Eashen pop behind us once, so we had to run and jump from the ledges back over. I wasn't surprised in the least that every monk and shadownight made it the first try with no problems. Watching the casters attempt it was making me so hard I was in tears.
The only problem I have ever had with the UI is the occasional time I right click on the screen to activate mouse look and end up clicking on a chat window by accident and pulling up the chat config menu. That hasn't been much of a problem since I removed chat window titles... just gotta get used to it.
I don't use the left button to move forward... haven't since the days of the original DOOM.
DFGH are the only movement keys I use...
d = turn left (becomes strafe left on right click and hold)
f = move back
g = move forward
h = turn right (becomes strafe right on right click and hold)
I never could understand the WASD method... fingers get tied up when switching from W (run forward) to S (run backward). Can't have that in FPS games.
The best configs come from just dropping your hands on the keyboard wherever they are comfortable and assigning keys accordingly. It really sucks that keyboards can't handle more than 4 simultaneous keystrokes at a time... I can think of many situations where I'd love to be holding down 4+ keys and hammering away on 2-3 more. If keyboards could do that I'd never bother to use the mouse at all. Mice cause me finger strain in the pinky of my right hand after about 8 hours of solid play... other than that I could go forever.

Yep, I've basically got a tribes setup... but I don't use mouselook. Ever. Especially now, since then you left click while mouse-looking you'll target whatever's under your mouse pointer. Lots of people breaking mez's this week using mouselook.

dfgh? Is your pinkie on the d? I find that for heavy use, I prefer a "stronger" finger and my forward move would definitely count as heavy use. I suppose it's really not much different. I just prefer to use my pinkie for "tapping" and not for more constant, continuous use.
I'm surprised you have trouble with wasd.
w - left middle finger
a - left ring finger
d - left index finger
caplock - left pinkie
when you need to go backwards, just drop the middle finger down one row to the "s"
when you need to autoattack, slide the left ring finger up to the "q".
when I need to change views, it's one key over to "f"
replies, have "r" handy for left index finger.
When you need to "con", slip the left index finger down to "c"
when you need to sit, slip the left index finger down to "x"
When I need to duck, I use my left index to move over the "b". Loiena uses "z".
when you need to target nearest npc, tap caps lock (or tab) with your pinkie.
ring and index fingers handle the 1-5 hotkeys
Basically, my entire set up, except for clicking and steering is all on the left hand side of my keyboard and never requires me to lift my hands.
This thread has been hijacked but good, eh?

DFGH
pinky on d, thumb on space bar
This also has the advantage of dropping the meaty left side of your left palm directly on the ALT key, and you can tap it without using your fingers just by shifting your wrist a bit. This has the advantage of giving you six fingers on your left hand. ALT makes a good place for duck, SPACE for jump. DFGH for movement, surrounding keys for bringing up other screens and other activities you usually do when not moving or in combat. I use all five (err six) fingers heavily, none of them go for just tapping... but that's because I've been playing FPS since Wolf3D.
For your other hand, if you don't want mouse... drop it on the num pad with your thumb on the right arrow key and your fingers on 789+ respectively.. Now you have three keys under your thumb, three more in easy up/down movement for opinter/middle/index finger, pinky on +, and now the side of your palm over enter key, giving you the six fingers deal again. Having 12 fingers is an easy way to gain a sick advantage over your opponents in FPS games. That setup for the right hand makes for bitching weapons selection and firing control for games like Descent, X-Wing, Freespace, etc. Set the + button to be roll on and you can learn to fly circling spirals around folks that'll give them vertigo trying to track you.
The best thing... that setup is comfortable. You can play in it for hours on end with no strain to any part of your hands or wrists whatsoever.
I just want a keyboard where I can use both the left and right hands in those setups at once. As it is, no keyboard can handle that many keys being hit. I figured that maybe USB keyboards could do it, but they use the same outdated keyboard controllers that regular ones do. USB definitely has the capability and bandwidth for it, if someone will make a decent keyboard controller. Updating keyboard drivers to handle the extra input should also be no problem, if they even need it at all...
Hold down 4 keys, one at a time. Watch them repeat. Press a 5th. You'll get no response from the 5th. Now, there are zones in a keyboard... if you've ever seen one fail where you lose a small section of neighboring keys then you know what a zone is (I don't think zone is the technical term for it, dunno what that would be). I think it has to do with the sensors under the keys and how many things they can sense at a time... You can indeed hold down more than four keys if and only if you don't hold down more than two per zone... but any config taking advantage of that sure as hell won't be comfortable... and hitting more than 4 at once in any zone is likely to cause the 5th to get jumbled/lost on the way to the PC.
Keyboard technology is still stuck in the 1980s. If someone knows of a board that can handle all the punishment I'm describing, for the love of god man please share that information, I've been looking for something like that forever.
You can tell I've thought about this far too much.
On a side note, I despise the Windows keys. They interfere with proper gaming...

I was surprised to find that lots of people apparantly use the left button for forward. For me, left button is strictly used for targeting or hotkey selection (for me at least). I was shocked a bit when people started complaining about the targeting bug. I went in and tried to duplicate it and no matter how many times I moved my mouse over someone, it didn't target them, even when i was right clicking. Heh. Until I came back and re-read the posts, I didn't realize it was because they were also using left click for forward. To me, using the left mouse for forward negates the advantages of the right mouse button.
The beauty of mouselook is the hold right click. If someone can explain to me how I can achieve the fluid, sweeping circle strafing, both forward and backwards without using the right mouse button, I'm all ears. I feel like a figure skater with my mouse/keyboard combo while to me, everyone else looks like they're wearing snowshoes.

Well I used to do that sort of thing in Descent by using the right arrow key under my right thumb in the above configuration and a joystick on the left hand. Then a few years went by and I came back to Descent3 for funsies and realized what a god awful config that really was.
Descent and Mechwarrior are the places to develop configurations. FPS games are childs play by comparison. Mechwarrior has like fifty freaking different kinds of axis. One for your movement, one for your own view, one for your pilot's head inside the cockpit... it goes on. Descent is just gut twisting xyz axis action. Zero G makes it very different from standard FPS games. Too bad they dropped the ball with Descent3, that series could have gone somewhere if they concentrated on making it PvP like Q3, UT and CS are.
Raviel Darkfyre

Insidious Blood

Indeed. FPS's will leave you with one hand on keyboard, one hand on mouse. (Tribes, Quake, UT, CS, ETc)
Mechwarrior requires you to BE the keyboard if you plan on not sucking. I played MW4 for months online, and got used to rarely touching the mouse.

No, you can't modify the spell book for melees.
The spell bar, and book, are hard coded not to open for non-caster classes... the same way the mana bar won't appear for non-mana classes.

Yeah, Descent was an incredible game. Easily as fun as Quake-type games because of the extra axes you get when you're not just moving horizontally, more or less. I know a few pilots and have read a bit on fighter pilots, and they say it's very hard for most people to think of movement in three dimensions, and some people just seem born with a lot of the ability or without any. It was great fun in that game to have someone chasing you while doing a loop, then change directions on the loop and watch him try to figure out where the hell your ship would wind up and how he could adjust his flight to catch up to you or cut you off before you were behind him. Makes regular FPS stuff seem like kindgarten.
As to good keyboards, get an IBM. They're thick and heavy and have a substantial click(noisy too), but they have big enter keys, generously sized regular keys, and can take one hell of a pounding. I've had a number of keyboards give out on me over the years, sometimes seemingly for no reason, but IBM's really hold up well. They're pricey too--usually like 70 to 100 bucks.
I'm not sure they even sell them anymore, but as a primary way you communicate with your computer, they're as important to me as a good mouse or monitor or sound card. If the interface is off--you really feel it, and a good one really helps. A good keyboard takes more abuse than anything, so to me it's worth the price.

I couldn't imagine pulling without mouselook. Might as well play in 3rd person with your up/down world being so keyboard driven. Yuk.....
I use esdf and a combo of the arrow keys for circle straffing while engaged with the MOB. Pulling I use the mouse with both buttons for drive at times and the "e" key at times. Depends on how twisty the drive is. Also depends if a split is required.

The ability to use hotkeys is hardcoded to the original 10 hotkeys. We are unable to place them anywhere else. That explains the problem i was having today. I was not able to place hotkeys in the boxes. Oh well it was a nice try and definetely a good idea. If someone finds a way pls post up i would love to be able to do this.
