I heard there's no windowed mode and the game crashes if you alt-tab out of it... /sigh, when will they learn...
That's nearly enough to turn me off it right there.

Its good, and looks pretty good and runs great, no hint of graphical lag yet whatsoever. Me and a bunch o guildies started up on the same server. (Create/delete is easier than buying a world pass on some servers)

create delete? omg that took forever <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/images/emoticons/frown.gif ALT=":("> and so far im the only one on the server we wanted to play on, my friends decided to play ragnarok because its the #2 most populated us server from the sound of things, and it costs 1300 for a world pass... and let me tell you how hard it is to get that kind of gil...
gameplay wise, its been pretty cool, the quests are well done, eg. i talked to this little girl, and it changes to a cut scene with a theif running away with a stolen item, and you get the mission to find the thief... and if you accept as you walk along the path she ran and talk to npc's they tell you if they saw her and where she went... i was totally shocked that they had this kind of story for a simple quest(quests are random content missions are static)
it seems pretty cool, but very confusing at first, im not quite sure on the whole item delay deal, its like +50 to delay, is that good or bad? i would assume bad, but since its adding low damage i dont know... really its all too confusing to take in at once.
it has great potential once you get the world pass thing sorted out...
</p>
one of my bro's just installed it and has played it for about an hour and a half now. it looks SWEET, i'm gunna go to the store and buy it or order it tomorrow asap. the combat animations are way cool, the graphics rock, spells are sweet, oh man i cant say enough.
from a person who has been off eq for about 4 months now, this game has sparked my interest big time.
i think i'm gunna make a thief/war to 30 then dark knight/thief from 30 on, elvaan. but i dunno yet <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/images/emoticons/smile.gif ALT=":)">
</p>
What strikes me...just from reading the FAQ's is just how PURE it all sounds to me.
Like what EQ should be
Monk ultimate damage dealers, weak tanks
Warrior ultimate damage takers, weak DPS
White mage heals and debuffs
Black mage huge ranged spell damage
Red mage hybrid- jack of all trades
Thief can backstab and do good dmg but also adds utility and treasure hunting can get your group cool stuff
Then at level 30 upgrade yourself and play a whole other class...
I am thinking of doing a 'Lulu' archetype with black magic/then upgrade to summoning
but I might also do monk/ninja for the ultimate in martial arts, or maybe monk/samurai so i don't lose DPS
Also they have lots of room for expansion.
Of note classes are missing: Dancer and Chemist
I could also see a class that can make explosives and summon bomb pets too
Also a gunblade would be fun to wield <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/images/emoticons/smile.gif ALT=":)">
i am still waiting for Lenardo's word and maybe a few reviews before I buy but it looks great so far!
</p>
the great thing about it is that i feel like a noob again, something that never happened when i created a new character in eq. eq lost its replay value over time for me and i got bored at the 60+ levels, but this game is like a breath of fresh air.
oh hell what am i doing to myself lmao must...have...self...control.....dont...get...obse ssed

well after 3 hours of noob play...<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/images/emoticons/happy.gif ALT=":D">
much fun was had! quick run down of pro's con's i've run into
pros: great graphics, animations are smooth look really nice after l@m3 eq animations, combat is fun-not a snooze fest because of weapon skills, magic bursts, renkie, downtime at level 4 was 30 secs top to med to full from oom, story line is there mebbe not normal FF story but is there! little lag for me in city, but have graphics cranked and on dialup so<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/images/emoticons/wink.gif ALT=";)">
cons: seems like a lot of work to just get game booted up-lots of menus to navigate, controls-very annoying, still trying to get them customized how i like, not as much customization to char creation (though i found what i wanted and really like the look of them), and the biggy not being able to pick my server<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/images/emoticons/sick.gif ALT=":x">
Thankfully had friend who got was playing before me and raised the 1k gil, took her about 4 or 5 hours to get that much as a noob to the game. tonight in 3 hours we each pulled in about 400 to 500 gil, and one item away from getting 600 gil reward so if you in a hurry create delete prolly work well.
one other thing that i havent totally decided on is the 1 char per server. the thing that might make it ok, is that if you get tired of your current job (class) you can go to town and change it to whatever else you want free of charge and play that job for however long you want.
if you want to go back to your main, just switch jobs again and you are back where you started.
so there you have it<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/images/emoticons/tongue.gif ALT=":p"> my one nights worth of review<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/images/emoticons/wink.gif ALT=";)"> take it for what its worth. feel free to comment ask questions, make corrections!

<blockquote>Quote:<hr>Monk ultimate damage dealers, weak tanks<hr></blockquote>
Actually monks are decent tanks just because they get a huge HP tank to play off. Level for level they'll usually have the most out of all the classes.
And i have to say its a breath of fresh air not knowing what the next enemy will do. Monsters all have a few specials they can draw from. (By far my most hated though is Sheep Song (damn ornery sheep!) and the sleep spell (both area effect spells) of the walking vegetables -- in addition to having great animations per ability. (They did agreat job on animations)
Creatures also appear to have semi-randomly generated stats.. defense / damage can vary from same level/type of mob to another.
I'm enjoying it quite a bit.. its got a lot of features eq shoulda had.
My worst peeve with FFXI is the PlayOnline stuff. Tons of menus you have to punch through to log in (although you can leave the window open on it so if you wanna check the web just logout leave window open then pop back in)

Ok it all sounds good so far but I have one major question. I like FF and I like what I've heard from the above reviews. The one thing I want to know is if the game forces you to group like EQ does. Are you able to do things on your own and still progress in the story of the game or do you have to form up with 30+ other people in order to move along? I can understand if you want to fight "gods" like in EQ, but what about the "grind" mobs? I just don't want to get involved in another game where you have to be a certain class in order to "solo" or have to constantly find other people to depend on in order to do a quest or gain some exp.

Classes are not that out of balance--AbsorEQ</p>
I've played it for about 5 hours now, am a level 5 monk....and frankly I'm having a blast. I'm finding time to play whenever I can, I'm running around, it's a beautiful game in all respects. Monks are balanced, and do good damage and take it pretty decently, lots of HP...all in all very fun.
Combat skills based on TP are like monk spells too, which is sweet.

I had a question about the music. Is it the type of music that the other final fantasy games had? Different?
I read that grouping in ffxi is just as long and annoying as it is in EQ..2 hours to find one, 20 min to get there..10 minutes to kill. Any comments if this is true or not? They reported it takes months to level up (not a bad thing) but because of the lame grouping system, and soloing is not possible at all.

The Halloween event is going on strong right now... basically, you buy candy, give it to certain monsters around town and you get stuff like fireworks and Jack-o-Lantern hats (which tarus look very strange in)
If you watch the live cam long enough, you are sure to see a couple run past wearing them.

Installed it, omg 6 gig!
Anyone know which is a good english speaking server? Having a bit of prob socializing with japs, they speak little english..gah
Also, I hope someone comes up with an EQ like interface in the future, the current now is just whacked and wierd, not too intuitive I thought.
Just picked up a monk, good fun and dmg, mobs actually miss you quite abit.
</p>
This another pay to play game? or just buy it and play for free like diablo.
</p>
controls are actually really good once you figure them out, I prefer it to EQ actually.
The whole trick to it is to stop thinking like it's EQ, and stop using the mouse. Everything can be done with the keyboard, and it works much better for it. The only annoying thing is having to press control and the button for a hotkey...but other than that it's very nice.

Even with broadband, it's the patch from hell hehehe. My advice is don't waste any time at all reading up on instructions, manual, etc. Get to patching as soon as possible once your basic installation and "play online" registration is taken care of.
About a 1.5 hour patch for me with a really good broadband connection.

you can copy the playonline folder from someone elses computer onto yours and it greatly reduces the patch time. that only works for a *fresh* installation. they have a little thing about it on www.ffxionline.com

ok, coming close to putting some serious thoughts into sub jobs.
Main job as monks*for obvious reasons* Hearing that thief as a sub will make you a killing machine and $$$*pick pocket*.
Any thoughts?

I got to level 10 mainly soloing last night we got enough people on and made two groups and merged them as an alliance. We played with the experience a bit some lower levels would leave and higher would enter. Basically the lower the lever you are in a alliance/group the less exp you get.
Lag has not been a problem for me. I lost connection once (receive hit 0) but that was because I forget to turn off my virus scanner and it updated.
I really like the auctions system. You put an item in the auction house in a town set a price and leave. Check back when you can or at your house and pick up the money.
Only bad thing is that you can not customize your keyboard. But after a couple of hours of grinding out exp you get used to it.
The Skill chain and Exp chains we are currently working out. But basically each of your battle abilities has a earth wind fire or water effect. If you use these around the same time as another in your group you get a cool graphic and do much more damage. Exp chain is basically just keep killing a mob in succession before a timer runs out and you get added exp for each chain you make. We got up to chain #5 before we had to med.
Quests, missions and conquest's are also an interesting twist. Quests get you money and some exp. Missions get you Conquest points which you can use like money to get certain items. Their is basically 4 factions in the world when you start you can help whatever home city you are in. When you join you get a Sibnet cast on you and when you keel a creature you add to the regions conquest points. By doing the missions you get dfferent ranks. These add to your local popularity and from what I have seen give you better prices on items. The missions are cool and you get to see small cut scenes sometimes. The ones I have done just require you to run around a lot. I am sure they get much more detailed at higher levels.

i'm finding that if you forget you have a mouse, you work better with just keyboard
OR if you have a gamepad type controller -which i have- it works ALOT better - i mean night and day difference. now if i can figure out what button does what i'll be gtg..
how long is reset on 100 fists anyway?
as to the lack of avatars, i find that all of them male & female are alot better than all but SWG's setup even with the limited selection- remember this game was made for the PS2... not the pc.

I can't get past the clunky keyboard interface; it's a nightmare. What's up with making the direction controls work off the number pad and not the separate arrow keys? I keep hitting the wrong key on the number pad--adjacent keys control 1st person/3d person perspective, camera distance, and some other things. I'd love to switch the num pad arrows and the other arrow keys (those control camera angle atm), but the game won't let me--you can't customize the keyboard. And why are all the hotkeys set up so that you have to hit "ctrl" or "shift" to get them to work? It requires two hands to use any of them. I really can't believe there's no way to customize it at all. That's just stupid, in this day and age. And I'm not going to buy a gamepad to play it, no way. It's a PC game, for God's sake, so it ought to behave like a PC game.
Also, I was really disappointed in the lack of options for customizing your avatar. I guess EQ post Luclin and then SWG spoiled me, but I expect more than eight different faces per race/gender choice. I can't think of another online game I've played since UO and the original EQ that gave you so few options; those games at least had the excuse of coming out 1997-1999. And many of the avatars are ugly. The women are all shaped like pears, with really wide hips and big butts, and their arms seem to be connected to their bodies like Gumby's used to be connected to his.
This one is probably going back to the store. At the least, I won't pay for it past my free month.
</p>
damn you guys, using the numpad isnt that horrible. it requires minimal dexterity to use it and the buttons are set up pefectly (5 is 1st/3rd view, 9 and 3 are zoom in/out, etc..) and it makes for quick gameplay and view control. the only hotkeys i'm using right now are attack and con, and both of those can be used with one hand. the other things that you would have to use two hands for you can access by pressing the negative sign to get the main menu up and navigate with the mouse after that. the mouse snaps to the first icon on a menu when you bring it up for the first time so it doesnt take that long to navigate through the menus.
you can also type out what spell you want to cast or what ability you want to use, /assist, and everything if that is quicker for you. sometimes i like to lean back and not use the mouse at all and just use the keyboard. unless youre some dousche of a typist it should be done quite easily. and if i'm not mistaken, you can use the arrow keys to navigate the menus? so theres your d-pad on a ps2 controller.
i like it, and i've only played like 2 hours so far.
</p>
Everything in the game can be controlled through the keyboard.
It's really pretty easy actually. Park your hands near both sets of arrow keys and you can basically access everything from there.
</p>
I think it's kind of funny that we're quick to pardon the inexcusable stupidities of game designers when we like the game, and jump on them with both feet when we don't. The fact is, they could have broadened the game's appeal a great deal if they had included some keyboard customization features.
I haven't seen anything compelling in the gameplay so far that makes me want to get beyond what is surely a major oversight on the part of the designers of this game. If I did, I'd probably be more interested in retraining my wrist and finger reflexes as the rest of you are.
And the characters are still ugly to me. No getting around that for me, personally, by myself, imho. Guess SWG spoiled me.
</p>
I think its kind of funny how the down arrow being one button below where it "normally" is and having to press an extra button to access hotkeys makes or breaks the game.
If you cant get used to that I think a good ole "joo sux0rz" is deserved for not being able to be an adaptive computer gamer. :P
</p>
God forbid I should dislike a game you're enjoying, I guess. Ok. I'll shut up and go away.
Always nice to come someplace where discussion is welcome, I must say.
</p>
Oh Christ, don't get all pissy when someone was obviously joking, as the good ol' "<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/images/emoticons/tongue.gif ALT=":p"> " in his post would infer.
You're complaining about the keyboard, all we're saying is that we haven't had difficulties yet. Sure, I did at first because I'm used to EQ. After I realized I could ignore my mouse though it got much easier.
</p>
You do know you can customize your keyboard controls to your liking don't you? Just go to compact keyboard and then you can set any key to whatever you want.
But using a controller is far superior.

I created a monk on Titan. After reading some I found I cannot use a pass to move a char only to create a char.
Is there a server with a collection of us on it? I would love to play with some people from here.
I am enjoying the game so far, but have only played today. I bought some claws and will likely get a staff. I am not sure what I will sub, warrior or samurai.
My monks name is Myamoto

Use the compact keyboard<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/images/emoticons/ohwell.gif ALT=":"> It uses the tried and true WASD keys that are so popular in most games (EQ's controls are clunkier IMHO). The compact keyboard also lets you use most of the regular keys. You have to realize though that the game was designed for the PS2 gamepad, so you will feel MUCH more in control using one or something similar. The alt+key design is due to having to hold+push a button on the gamepad.
Macros are much more complex in what they can enable then EQ's pretty tame system. You can do things such as show your hp, mp and tp in a say; heck you can even enable the rumble shock found on gamepads if you need to alert your party of a pull or a train, or just wake them up. I use it for my job abilities and weaponskills.
If you really need it to get out of the mindset, just disconnect your mouse. You don't need it at all for the game, and doing so might stop you from doing bad habits.
Turonyen
</p>
woah absolutemaster, you can make them rumble? sweet!
Definately this might be the one that breaks me out of eq... when I get it that is.
</p>
Advice on starting:
1) get signet from an guard (for finding crystals)
2) use the auction house for all your worldly needs.
3) loot you might think of as trash can be sold at auction for far more than you think (lot of that trash is used in trades)

i dislike the skating over the world ala swg
but i noticed it uses ALOT less resources than EQ does...and runs BETTER than EQ
and i know why too..
it was DESIGNED to be played on a PS2, thus you had to design EVERYTHING to run on a PS2.. its cpu, its ram, it's graphics, thus
you get superior performance when you can run it on equipment BETTER than "spec"
i have yet to drop under 30fps in game
