It's been a couple of years but the wife and I are probably going to return to CoH at least for awhile. WoW is just boring any more.
I looked on the official site and saw some cool stuff mentioned. Storage/banking of sorts? Respeccing, and an auction house? Sounds cool.
I am sure we lost our names but maybe not our characters. I just may start over anyway just to relearn how to play.
Anyone have some tips or weblinks to good info?
I remember you could only get certain powers at certain places or something like that. I definitely need a refresher on making macros.
Thanks!

If you left before respeccing was put in, then ya you HAVE been gone a while. 8)
There's been far to many changes to list, of course. But the basic game play has remained the same, so if you remember anything at all it's probably still true.
Names were "freed up" temporarily some time back. Basically if you had a character on an account that had been deactivated for over 3 months, and the character was under level 30, then the name went up for grabs. The name was only removed from its existing character if another player chose it when making theirs.
Here's a link to the "Guide to guides" section of the forums (http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showflat.php?Cat=0&Number=7529600&an=0&page=0#Post7529600). It has a ton of links to player-made guides that should cover just about everything. I cannot guarantee it is all up to date but most guides should have an indicator next to them telling you in what issue they were written. I do recommend that you get reacquainted with the basics of the game through firsthand experience, though. It is a rather simple system. :)
Oh and one final note: The auction houses/invention stuff is not live yet. That's all stuff for the next big update Issue 9. I'll be reactivating for that one, to be sure.

Were you around for the Global Defense Reduction and Enhancement Diversification adjustments?
The GDR basically reduced all defense and resistance powers. Some, notably pool powers, barely give any defense/resistance any longer. The upshot was that tankers couldn't survive truely obscene levels of damage any longer. With a good, build a tanker can still absorb a lot of damage though.
ED changed how you can slot enhancements. Basically, you can't have more than 3 of the same SO in a power any longer. Otherwise, there is a very steep lose in effectiveness. Basically it means that powers like Stamina can only have 3 slots in them instead of 6; attack powers can only have 3 damages in them instead of 5-6. It makes you think a bit more about your slotting.
On the goodside of things, Veteran's Rewards give you extra free costume changes, costume pieces (wings, trenchcoats, samurari armor) respecs, and some temporary powers.
Faultline has been completely redone. It's now a regular city zone with it's own missions, and a hazard portion around the dam itself.
The next update, which is on test right now, will add a crafting-oid system. I've played around with it a bit. It looks interesting.
I was thinking of coming back to try this free weekend but I can't find my damn disc...
Gonna keep looking for them, anyone know if there is a legit place to d/l it? like somewhere on the coh site?

ftp://client.coh.com/US/CohUpdater.exe
Run the updater, and it will download the game.
Thanks, d/ling it atm
edit looks like it is going to be a long wait.. guess I will try it out tomorrow for however much time
finally got the d/l and gave it a try... it was brutal
my character was no longer a super hero
I missed like have the shots I fired, and thats with the targetting drone
the travel powers seem slower.. all and all it did not take but maybe an hour before i remembered why I quit.
Maybe it would have been different if anyone was grouping or even chatting.. the only 2 people i saw the WHOLE time I played were at the train station
maybe I will start a new char in a lil bit and give it a try from scratch but not sure
