View Full Version : Hard Data on Exp change

09-05-2002, 01:33 PM
Xannin posted this here originally, but it was buried in the "we don't like the way you spell" thread, so I thought I would give it it's own topic, since it appears to bode ill for *everyone* except the very smallest percentage of people exclusively hunting level 56+ mobs.

Post it right here in this thread so we can discuss it. I know the mods don't like the source of the data, but face it guys we need hard numbers and this is just about the only way to get them. <blockquote>Quote:<hr> So some astute people of noticed the apparent exp nerf when hunting blue con mobs. Some say it only affects those rotten soloers who feed off of low blue con mobs for exp, the data I present suggests this change to exp is nothing short of a full scale nerf for all, grouped or otherwise.

Data collection method:

Using the original exp formula and personal experience logs I was able to generate a list of exp given befor the September 4 patch. Next using the dreaded level 60 monk soloer, I captured the exp rewarded for the post September 4 patch.

Original Exp Formula

code:--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

(mob level^2) * class mod * (Zone experience mod) = exp reward

ZEM = 75, class mod = 1.2 for monk

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have not included the additional factor for group exp because it does not apply for a soloer.

code:--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

mob lvl |Pre Sept 4 patch&nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp |Post Sept 4 patch&nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp |% of pre Sept 4 exp

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

this is strictly level exp with AAexp turned off, AA exp gain has always been significantly less than level exp

Conclusion:

For level 60 characters, any mob less than 56 will not reward experience equivalent to what it was prior to the September 4 patch. However mobs whose level is 56 and up will see a significant % increase. Unfortunately it is not feasible for me to map the % gain in higher level encounters while solo; we can only assume the bonus gets better. These changes may not be limited to level 60 players but may in fact affect all levels.

I ask the reader to evaluate the impact these changes have on their personal game play and to decide for themselves if this is good or bad for them.

Also realize that when GROUPED, due to the group xp bonus being a multiplier rather than an additive, the difference in xp gained per kill will indeed be higher, especially when at the full 36% bonus for being in a full group. Same goes for the zone experience bonus. Ideally one would want the highest ZEM bonus and GEM bonus as high numbers in both of those multipliers would make for a very large difference in the numbers. This would explain why full groups in Sleeper's Tomb are raking in so much xp. The higher multipliers will widen the gap between mobs farther than it appears above.

ok but how do these numbers look for 56-59 and also 51-55 players. It all seems to be based on differential and by definition the 60 player will have the widest differential (13 levels on the chart) from a 47. A 55 will find the 47 a harder challenge but will we find the points the same? We shouldn't but are the points in the linked table a fixed amount. Of course if they are fixed, since the amount needed per level is relatively smaller the increase per kill becomes larger.

Evilnight, I agree we need to talk about it. I just wanted enough people to see it before it got locked and I thought it might not set off the alarms if I just posted a link. Either way is good though!

I don't understand this. This can't be a fixed number. If it were then a group mid-40ish players killing lvl 47 mobs would be screwed out of alot of xp. This defeats the purpose of the patch. It has to be an applied penalty.

They need to redo the tests with AA exp. There was no change to that between patches.

So a level 58 mob gives a whopping 16% more than it did before? Are you kidding me? that doesn't sound like "significantly more" that sounds like throwing us a bone while taking away 65% at the other end of the scale.

I thought ShowEQ did not give acurate EXP numbers since Luclin came out. I thought it only gave a percentage of blue movement, unless you did a zone rezone after every kill?

we basically need people at each level from 51 to 59 then to gather *cough - somehow - cough* these same numbers or values and see if the table is the same or if at each level they use a seperate xp amount you gather. This total information should then be the basis for determining whether we solo or group and at what level and against what targets. Perhaps these new xp mods hit the level 60 crowd most. If as a level 55 I only see a 10% reduction against a level 47 I think I can live with that but if I see a 70% redux just like the 60s do that would sux. It would basically seem to force the 60 to go after a level 52 for equivalent xp (ie 8 levels less). Of course a level 52 isn't as easy a target but isn't that the whole point of thing - to make it harder not easier? If you want it easy stay fighting those low risk items. You want fast xp then take a risk solo or join a group.

As previous posts stated now that grouping will be more desireable more groups will occur. Personally I think it might make sense to go into allakhazam, look in each zone and find as tough a mob as you think you can handle, determine spawns and risk and go fight them.

These numbers can't be quite right... they don't reflect reports we are getting from folks. Someone better than I am at math needs to figure out what formula governs the progression of the numbers from 45 up to say 70 (70 is as high as killable mobs go in this game AT THIS TIME).

Could someone redo all of these tests using AAXP as the baseline? I'm inclined to think that somehow the recent xp changes may have skewed these numbers... the data in the column for "Solo XP Pre Patch" may NOT reflect the actual numbers that would have been there, and all this calculation is based on it. If anyone has some solo numbers we could use that are from AAXP and before the patch, we could probably get a better look at the governing formula by comparing it to AAXP numbers now after the patch.

How do you do an AA baseline?

Exp points are Exp points. They don't get changed depending on your slider bar, only your race mod and level.

I'm having trouble beleiving these numbers, they seem far too extreme of a change and far too much of a nerf, even for Verant.

The other report we got from that one monk initially was that 46 was half, 51 was even, and 56 was triple, which seemed "too good to be true" to me.

I'm thinking the truth must be somewhere in between.

I can tell you for a fact that something doesn't jive with these numbers. I haven't had a chance to play much, but I did get a few kills in. I grind in PoM, and until yesterday, every blue con kill in the zone gave me 1% AA Exp. Most of the mobs that I fight are level 55+, so I'm focussing on the high end here. The first 2 kills I did (Chuckles the Great and Brenn in AiW4) gave me 3% AA Exp each. The third kill (Grenn in AiW4) gave me 4% AA Exp. These were "solo" kills as I had my cleric bot ungrouped as usual. I could see some rounding errors that would make me get 2% exp under the numbers posted here, but I'm not even remotely close to that. The modified exp for 56-58ish mobs (Grenn/Brenn) was on the order of 300% of the old experience, no where near the 117% claimed here. I'm guessing whatever zone this person was in got a huge ZEM nerf, or they missed something else critical.

I'm looking forward to trying some 60-65 mobs and see how those go.

Okay..I don't have exact numbers to post, but last night our guild was doing ToV for armor drops. I was there for about 2 or 3 hours and in that time, I watched very carefully to my normal exp and my AA Exp.

In that time, every mob was either Even Con, Yellow, or Red con to me at level 60.

I gained 1 percent of Regular Experience for every 3 to 4 kills.

I gained 1 percent of AAXP for every White, 1 1/2 Yellow and gained 2 percent AAXP for every Red.

This is a huge jump compaired to before the patch. Before the patch, I was getting 4 or 5 kills per AAXP in ToV.

I'd bet that ShowEQ simply isn't sniffing the right numbers out. They've had some serious problems reading XP in the past.

I think we might be better off doing our own sample and sticking to AA, since AA is the same value/scale per point for everyone regardless of your level, right?

Have a 50 Monk take out one each in the 45-60 range and tell us the %aa he gets per kill. Repeat with a 55 Monk and a 60 Monk, then bring the numbers back here.

Take some samples. Record the numbers as well as the mobs you fought and what zone you fought in, then bring them back and post them here. We will see what pans out.

good basic idea Evil but one problem with this thing is determining the level you are fighting. At 55 I hunt BnB in solb a lot. Boring but safe and it (was)decent xp. I ran into lt blue and dk as well. If I attempt to supply data I can easily ignore the lt blue (killing only the dark) but the dk blue can vary in level by about 4-5 (even just within the species whether bat or bug).

09-05-2002, 08:41 PM
The thing that bugs me is this: Killing level 54-56 myconids has always been considered "bad" XP, and it was much more beneficial to hunt in disco or kitchen where the mobs were 44-51 (ish?) and died faster - that was the "good" XP. This chart shows that myconids essentially have not improved, in fact, they are a tiny bit worse! I'm fine with bottom-feeding on level 46 mobs becoming worse XP, but I'm very unhappy about camps that were already both 1) bad XP and 2) reasonably challenging, becoming worse XP. This doesn't strike me as the spirit or the intent of the change, but rather, just a wholesale nerf on XP. Sure, CT 4c will get a little bit better (not much, the mob level range is 54-60), but CT was already great XP because of it's nutty-high ZEM.

I was all for this change in theory, but if 56 is the "baseline", I strgonly feel the XP system needs to be re-tuned.

Before the patch yes. But after? As I understood the purpose of this change, higher level mobs are intended to be better XP now.

An employee of EQ actually posted on the board where this started telling the person who did it (fee) that if he was going to sniff information to have some pride and do it right. He pointed out some flaws in the information above.

The discussion is still going on as to what the real %'s are.

seq.sourceforge.net/showthread.php?s=f929e2522b958129658247d459b4394d&threadid=1878 (http://seq.sourceforge.net/showthread.php?s=f929e2522b958129658247d459b4394d&threadid=1878)

In short, lvl 60 will now take 50% longer to go from no XP in the bar to full XP(this accounts for the 75% modifier) and starting at lvl 55 mobs jump up in reward considerably. Lvl 54 and below mobs really aren't very attractive although there has been no change to them in particular, its only that level 60 is now longer which makes lvl 54 and lower mobs seem to give less XP.

I believe we should get a CON system to reflect this variation.

How this applies (or even whether it applies) to AAXP is not known at this point. It seems that the bonus for mobs lvl 55+ would still be in effect but whether you recieve 75% less per kill (on all kills while lvl 60) because lvl 60 is longer is neither proven/disproven yet. They are waiting on more data.

There are two possibilities for gaining AAXP at lvl 60:

1. The AAXP gained for mobs lvl 54 and below has not changed. For a level 55 mob you are receiving 95% more than before. A level 56 mob gives 108% more. More data at this time has not been gathered for level 57+ mobs but it likely increases even more.

2. You are receiving the XP as stated in option one but multiplied by 0.75. This would mean level 54 and lower give 25% less XP than before. Level 55 mobs give 46.25% more. Level 56 mobs give 56% more than before.

My feeling is that option one will be found to be correct, which is the best news we could get. No hard data yet on AAXP to prove/disprove this yet though.

Any tips on 55+ only areas? Did Gantru's tonight in UP, and they have about a 52-58 range. Small 4 man group got about a 2 blues in an hour (AAxp at 60). It pisses me off really. A 52 Gantru gives me less than half of what a 58 Gantru gets me, but both are about as hard. Verant should really go update the levels on things now that 50+ isn't arbitrary.

They changed so much... took me awhile to get a handle on it.

Only the 55+ mobs are giving the big exp bonus. Everything under 55 is the same as it always was.

This seems a little stupid to me considering the dificulty of most of those mobs in the 50-55 range. I'd like to see Verant add another bonus in to even out 50-55 so that they are worth the extra effort it takes to kill them.

Let me give you an example.

Akheva.

60Cleric, 60Bard, 60Warrior, 58Warrior, 60Monk(me), 60Enchanter with L46 Shrouded Anisher (SK) as a pet (love dire charm), all decked in mostly NToV or equivalent gear, all epiced.

We start clearing our way in.

5 regular Centi kills (L45-L49) yield about 1% AAxp (all are on AA except the 58Warrior).

We go after Mindworms (the big ones in the southeast corner) to see how the new xp changes worked out. Mindworms attack very fast, hit harder than the Centi, and are L52-L55, and will summon your ass. They also instantly drain your caster's mana pools if they get on them. I'd say that's a substantially higher risk vs reward.

I botched the pull a bit (tricky split) and we end up with 3 at once. No prob, one war on each and me on the third. Cleric was on the ball, we killed all three of them, was a tense fight and it was a load of fun as none of us were expecting that. I swear it looked like just 2 of them coming down the hall. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/images/emoticons/laugh.gif ALT=":lol">

Not even 1% AAxp. Pulled two more Mindworms, finally got 1% AAxp out of them. Looks like it takes 4-5 Mindworms to equal out to 5 Centi. That is total bullshit.

So, we decided to scrap mindworms. We went up and farmed Vadyn's guards for a bit to check out the changes further. Vadyn's guards (Rubble Rousers) are L58, have a shitload of HP, hit a ton harder than the mindworms, summon and enrage. Those L58 guards gave us 1% AA per kill. We farmed them for awhile (fast repop) then got bored and went back to killing Centi.

With that group we can take 5 centi at a time and kill them in under a minute. We just did what we always do... mass centi genocide. That provided us with far more xp than wurms or Rubble Rousers. We could kill 15 centi in the time it took for one rouser and or for 3 wurms.

15 centi (45-49) = 3%aa in 4 minutes - no risk, no downtime

1 rubble ( 58 ) = 1%aa in 4 minutes - some risk, no downtime

3 wurms (52-55) = 1.5%aa in 4 minutes - lots of risk, some downtime

So, tell me again why I should bother with the tougher mobs?

Verant needs to rework it like this...

15 centi (45-49) = 3%aa in 4 minutes - no risk, no downtime

1 rubble ( 58 ) = 2%aa in 4 minutes - some risk, no downtime

3 wurms (52-55) = 4%aa in 4 minutes - lots of risk, some downtime

Stick a bonus on mobs that are 50-55, and I'd up the bonus on 56-66 a bit as well. The carrot just isn't big enough.

Well i parsed a lot of timing etc. on leveling, here's data i've recorded (some of you may find this interesting)

Level 61 took 10 hours 15 minutes (roughly) to get the experience needed for 62.

Level 62 took 11 hours 12 minutes (roughly) to get the experience needed for 63

I'm about 30% into 63, and the rate seems the same amount (proportionally) worse than the previous level.

exp in 61 = 10% / hour

exp in 62 = 9% / hour

exp in 63 = 8% / hour

I haven't moved from the same xp spot so the data is relatively accurate. Anyway, there's the info for you that i've recorded thus far. There's 2 level 64s on brell, and about 4 level 63s (so far)

Levelling seems pretty easy so far.

Consider this as well...

The experience you gain in a level is *supposedly* related to your level vs. what you are killing.

If you're dropping yellow cons at 61 (say, crystalline golems in PoV) you get 1% every two kills or so, without fail. When you pull the white con spiders, it takes 3-4 kills per % movement.

Now you ding to 62. Golems are white, spiders are now blue. 3-4 golems = 1%, takes 4-5 spiders. (this is data I picked up subjectively as I leveled, it "seemed" like this...please don't start carving stone tablets).

At 64 I had no source of white / yellow mobs, I stayed in PoV. Incidently, it took 7-8 kills to get 1% of the level, regardless of whether it was golems or spiders...I have a sneaky feeling that if I had 65 mobs to fight, the level would have gone plenty faster.

So your spot didn't necessarily reflect that 63 is longer than 62 or what have you, only that you get diminishing returns as you level beyond the level of the mobs you fight.

Moral - go find something higher level than you and kick its arse, it's worth your while.
